I wrote an article for Write Magazine (Writers' Union of Canada) on fighting book bans in Canada. You can read it here:

Screenshot of first page of article linked in post. Title is "Standing Together Against Book Bans in Canada." Pull quote reads "while book banners speak of protecting children and advancing 'parental rights', they ignore the actual needs and rights of young readers."

It is really chilling to see how quickly Black, Caribbean, and African writers and academics have become the global face of AI use and accusations of plagiarism.

For such a serious charge, @vauhinivara.bsky.social's
article rests on...a Pangram scan.

Love this thread. Reminds me of our South West Coast Path walks... Hoping to return to the UK for a few more weeks of walking soooooon. Spring? Fingers crossed.

Harriet the Spy was one of the books that made me want to be a writer; I read it over and over. Imagine how lonely kids would be if they only read books about well-behaved perfect children who never had critical thoughts about adults or peers!

A wonderful little book about a family enjoying Pride Day. It can be picked up at your local independent bookstore. (I’m partial to Audrey’s in Edmonton) or directly from the publisher www.orcabook.com/Pride-Puppy

When @robinstevenson.bsky.social and Julie McLaughlin published the children’s book “Pride Puppy,” they had no idea it would become a target for censorship and be part of a case at America’s highest court. xtramagazine.com/culture/prid...

Was Banned Books Week censored at your library? Were events canceled, changed, or not allowed to happen at all?

Please tell me about it in this anonymous survey for a future piece. You'll find linked in the survey the story from last year.

Deadline: Oct 24.

If Kid Rock fears his grandkids fighting a civil war over religion, he should defend separation of church and state instead of fearmongering about Muslims. The answer to religious extremism isn’t Christian nationalism. It’s secular government that protects us all.

Feels to me like the U.S. government livestreaming the shooting death of a guy in a wheelchair is going to be in all the history books, and hopefully framed as the end of an era that was very bad, and not the start of an era that was much, much worse

October is LGBTQ+ History Month. The month celebrates the achievements, history and civil rights movements of the LGBTQ+ community. Today, it is the story of Jim Egan.

In 1986, Egan, who was self-employed much of his life, retired and applied for spousal benefits for Jack Nesbit, his partner of 40 years.
This was refused because they were a same sex couple. Egan launched a court case that made it to the Supreme Court.
While they lost their case, the court ruled to include sexual orientation as a prohibited grounds for discrimination under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This paved the way for the legalization of same sex marriage.

Good. But he was never going to get elected in this riding, so it wasn't a huge sacrifice. The BC Conservative party is still full of anti-LGBTQ bigots and conspiracy theorists, eg. Heather Maahs, who implied gay people are pedophiles. Apparently Lorne Doerkson can tolerate that with no trouble.

This book is 27 years old and just as relevant now as in 1999, because rape culture. It’s also been one of the most frequently banned books in American libraries since it was published, because god forbid young people know they’re not alone and have a voice to speak out against sexual violence.

Pretty wild to see Alito describe reliance on Obergefell as "much more concrete" than reliance on Roe v. Wade, because Roe was merely about "women's ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in." If it's a Ladies Issue, he just doesn't give a shit.

www.cbsnews.com/news/samuel-...

"One of the important factors we take into account in deciding whether we should reexamine a past decision is the degree to which there has been reliance on the decision," he said. "Obviously a great deal had changed in the country as a result of Obergefell. There was a lot of reliance in various ways on the decision in Obergefell."

I pointed out that people thought Roe v. Wade was settled law of the land, had organized their lives around it. Overturning Roe also would have consequences.

Obergefell, he said, was different.

"After Obergefell, people of the same sex got married and entered into contracts … it was much more concrete," he said. "Whereas with Roe, the argument was made that it had an effect on people's ideas, women's ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in, that this would have an effect on the society. It was much more abstract than what would've been involved had we been asked to overrule Obergefell."
