my favorite neighbor just bought their place in our complex so today I’m getting to engage in the homosocial passion of shitty DIY carpentry
would you believe I almost never get to wear this shirt
aaaand 5080s are now selling for what I got my 4090 for 4 years ago, very cool!
hi bloggers !! today, brookie shows off some cool things you can do with galleries and photos in pckt. let us know what you think ❤️ we can't wait to see what you share 🌠🌁🌇🌌🏞️
did this shockingly often for the couple years I was shooting a lot of film
for that matter a Windows PC graphics pipeline isn’t as meaningfully “generic” in comparison to consoles as people would think… a lot of the shit happening at the Nvidia driver level is pretty far from the spec, compatibility layers are just really good at baking all of that in nowadays
this is analogous to why Apple is about to deprecate their x86 -> ARM emulator while keeping carveouts for games / Crossover… they don’t want to keep maintaining the application layer outside of an environment that already has to do way more of that for D3D etc, the actual bytecode emulation is fine
short version is that it’s more about emulating a platform than an architecture at this point
probably Wii U emulation was the first time this meaningfully shifted because it was a weird combination of: underpowered/well-documented CPU architecture + sufficiently modern and complex graphics pipeline that functionally all the work and feature-rich emulation went to the latter
so it’s more like: the thing that historically necessitated a lot of performance overhead in emulation is now fixed/limited, but the complexity has been matched in other areas, there’s no magical way to ship a lightweight interpreter that makes a PS4 game functionally a PC game
this is both true and not— we’ve gotten to the point where dynamically recompiling instructions for x86 is somewhat trivial, but “modern” PS4+ shaders still have to be fully emulated, the architecture doesn’t make them meaningfully portable just because the CPU architecture is the same

after several weeks on the road shaving with my 10 year old drugstore electric razor motor shuddering like it was about to die with only half of my face shaved before a conference talk, I’m pleased to say it just passed gracefully at home. it is survived by my eyebrow and nose hair trimmer. #blessed

last time I was at Yosemite one of the women eating at the picnic table in front of us had a Lisa Frank-esque blue butterfly tramp stamp and I sort of regret not recruiting her to do off-off-brand marketing for Bluesky
just realized I accidentally booked tickets to see Godzilla Minus Zero at the Chinese Theater on election night. would like to thank my subconscious for keeping a metaphor in its back pocket like that
like my last couple of SFF desktops have felt like the CPU is basically hanging off of the GPU rather than vice versa and I probably care more about disk/memory being socketed than CPU these days, as FEX gets better I think it’s waiting right there for them. better cooling this way too
unmoved by RTX Spark laptops, will stick with MBP, but very curious if/when we’ll get this in an ITX platform with socketed LPCAMM2 DDR6, because I could see Nvidia becoming easily competitive with AMD/Intel in the desktop space in a few years
