How are AI images and videos changing the world we live in? How can we even still tell what is real and what is not? In an effort to find out, I visited Hany Farid, „sort of the dean of digital forensics“, for a couple of days in Berkeley. It was eye-opening. My story in @science.org 🧪
„While the information provided by the authorities does not indicate infection with tested high-threat pathogens or identify additional linked cases, the source of the fatal illness remains undetermined. A laboratory-associated exposure therefore cannot be fully excluded at this stage.“
„Based on the information provided by NFP, WHO has not identified evidence of ongoing transmission associated with this event. A key uncertainty remains the absence of a confirmed diagnosis in the deceased laboratory worker. WHO will continue to monitor the situation…“
New @who.int update on the suspected plague case in Russia:
„The NFP [National Focal Point] informed WHO that the case and all contacts had been tested for a range of microorganisms, including high-threat pathogens. Test results were negative for the tested high-threat pathogens.“
„Liability is a powerful incentive to behave responsibly. It speaks to corporations in a language they understand: Money.
Artificial intelligence is an industry in need of incentives to behave responsibly, to judge by the litany of transgressions […] in recent months.“

I think I’d rather not… 🫠
Doomsday is little more than a month away. At least according to a paper @science.org published in 1960. (No, really).
So of course I spent the last few days delving into the paper and its history 🧪
"Information from Russia has been incomplete, confusing, and contradictory."
My colleague @martinenserink.bsky.social on what we know so far about the possible plague death in Russia and the implications. 🧪
Well, this one landed right on my doorstep…
Uff, this one’s gonna be tough
Our summer academy on "Science and Histories of Fever" is in full swing at the Marsilius Kolleg, with great talks from e.g. @kakape.bsky.social, @feverprojecthd.bsky.social and @lendertgelens.bsky.social. If you are around, join us for "Marsilius Kontrovers" tonight at 7 pm:
Back in 2022, before ChatGPT was released, researchers were already trying to test how good LLMS could be at persuading humans. @kakape.bsky.social explains why those studies now present a new realm of questions about how people interact with machines. lnk.to/onthemedia/b...

Die Folge gibts z.B. hier: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/p...

The Kennedy Center was a beloved Washington institution, enjoyed by millions of people. It has been destroyed for no real reason. Just vanity, carelessness, indifference.

Great 🧵 There’s been a willingness from the beginning to try and find the handful sane MAHA policy positions instead of concentrating on the overwhelming agenda of rolling back science, evidence and public health. But when someone offers you a shit sandwich you don’t concentrate on the bread part.
This! MAHA is a movement largely made up of the affluent and privileged. These are people who are attracted to the idea that the individual is almost solely responsible for and has near complete control over his/her health, hence the hostility to public health in general, not just vaccines.
