The government really needs to get a handle on this and reverse the disastrous, Reform-mimicking, posturing of the Starmer era. The crack down on study visas helps nobody.

though sadly the inscription itself doesn't mention the smell (either of baking or of the baguette), though it does briefly describe how the 'crisp crust and chewy texture result in a specific sensory experience' ich.unesco.org/en/decisions... which seems like a shame.

a couple of years after it was added (2022) in 2024 they did a fun scratch and sniff baguette sticker to celebrate it being added to the inventory www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

prison for them all, quite frankly.

Hannah,

You are right and I owe you a straight correction. I pulled the wrong author. The book I wrote about is by a different Hannah Murray at the University of Liverpool. I should have verified the affiliation before sending, and I did not. That is on me.

Your actual work, the frontier Gothic piece and the Furbies book, is not something I have read, so I am not going to pretend otherwise or pivot into a pitch. If you ever want a conversation about your real work, I would start by reading it first.

Sorry for the mix up.

Always find this hilarious: people move from a city to the countryside (in this case NEXT TO A CHURCH) and then think they should have legal means to stop the ringing of bells or the chiming of bells on a clock because they don't like the noise. web.archive.org/web/20240731...

PSA: if you come across a weird historical smell thing, let me know - it's the right thing to do.

Please keep these coming!!! I have a few (inevitable) questions. Is the character a particularly astute sniffer? Or is the new nose for each day of the year merely aesthetic? What does the creepy Christmas guy *do*?

... It's just tech that is expensive, physically big, and hard to make widely available (don't know if the piece discusses this, don't have access to FT so riffing off the quote in the post at this point.)

@willtullett.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 12:40 PM

there is tech that detects and replicates odours (though what we mean there up for debate, perhaps '*appears* to make odours detectable and replicable' more accurate, like a camera or sound recording device, a charismatic technology that offers the appearance of replication)....

@willtullett.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 12:35 PM

the notion that there's a difference between sensory experience and representable/quantifiable 'data modality' is true not just for smell but most experience - a point that historians, who are troubled by what it means to extract experience from recalcitrant evidence, are well placed to think about

@willtullett.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 12:33 PM

think smell illustrates broader truth - that whatever one can digitally code will never be the same, or a substitute for, or an accurate representation of actual human experience. No matter what facile gibberish AI pumps out, we still have a choice about whether and how to embodied-ly engage with it
