I assume it is impossible to identify this fly seen on Willow in East Yorkshire last week? Even to genus? Egle? Dalia?

I am guessing Egle ciliata but that is not a very well-informed guess.

Two interesting things: 1. by 1964 the squirrels in nature books and public perception were already Grey. 2. the Rooks collecting acorns. Jays get all the press for dispersing and planting acorns, but Rooks do it a lot too, and are likely also very important dispersers of oaks. Magpies too.

The new (slightly revised) Red List of European Moths has been published by the EU. A summary and links to downloads can be found on our website. Moths play a vital role in ecosystems and there is also an important new document on how to plan for their conservation

Where do forest #fungi prefer to grow? A study published in #FungalEcology explored fungal communities across 11 different #forest substrates and showed that different substrates potentially act as important sources and reservoirs of fungal diversity. Read the paper: doi.org/10.1016/j.fu...

Spathulata brevipes, the very rare relative of the more common Cauliflower fungus (Sparassis crispa). Found in Hampshire this week. They were massive (approx 50x40cm) & had the most delicious smell which filled the air. Don’t worry I didn’t eat them! This species has wide, fan-like lobes. #ukfungi
