Walk from home to Salthouse via East Bank & the Iron Road. An in-off Great Spotted Woodpecker was a tantalising taster for next week (!). Steady movement of Pink-footed Geese west (650 in small groups) + a flock of five Red Kites near Salthouse.

A pleasing mix of moths at CMO last night. Feathered Thorn was NFY & was joined by Merveille du Jour, Scarce Bordered Straw, Bordered Straw (very lively & NFY), Grey Shoulder-knot, Clancy's Rustic, Red-lined Quaker (also NFY) & Chestnut.

Another good session on the Pat's Pool gull flock tonight w/ @mcbuckland.bsky.social. Up to a dozen birds noted, all new (a 2w may have been in last night) with 5 or 6 1st winters, 3 2nd winters, 1 "near-adult" & 2 adults. Several Meds & a couple of YLGulls + the 4 G Ibis.

Thanks very much for that, so helpful & much appreciated.
The cloud colour was north east of where the sun would have been beginning to set. There was a lot of heavy, but high, cloud yesterday evening (taken around 5.30) & not a lot of sunshine. A bit like the sky in your very similar shot, so that makes sense. Thx.
Last night, ahead of CaspFest, we saw this patch of a nacreous-like cloud. But what is it? It wasn't on view for long, but another patch was seen a couple of minutes later behind the Visitor Centre. Is there any other cloud type this could be please? @saloplarus.bsky.social

Yup ๐
Loving the Glossy Ibis still ~ tonight they dropped in briefly onto Pat's Pool, in the gllony fading light, at 6.20. They seemed jumpy and after a low pass by a Lesser Black-backed Gull, they whizzed off east.

What an epic late hour of the birding day ~ an exceptional count of 16+ Caspian Gulls onto Pat's Pool (a Cley record) - total was 10 1st winters, 2 2nd winters, 1 3rd winter & 3 adults. Also 5 michahellis & 7 Med Gulls. The 4 Glossy Ibis dropped in around 6.20. Superb ๐

The Great Fall is even more eye-catching, even in truncated RAR diary form. I'll post a few pages of that when I'm home ๐
Were you squeaking ๐
You're very welcome Steph. There's some lovely artwork that goes with the Wagtail. I'll post that when I get home ๐
Thanks Kevin, bet there's a few Kent listers who would have liked to have seen your Maidstone bird ๐
Thanks very much Gavin. Glad that the notes were interesting. Some of the numbers RAR records locally, in and around Cley and parishes, is quite something - 60 years and the decline is terrifying across so many species.
Absolutely right, imagine that arrival in a 21st century social media context!
Yes, the Ditchingham bird in the photo was one of the first in Norfolk, arrived around August 5th and those October records Richardson mentions were right at the back end of the third/fourth/final wave of the irruption. I still think they will come but likely, as you say, only ones and twos maybe.
Thanks Ron. Never thought of digitising until you mentioned it ๐
Thanks Tim ๐ Always amazed how reserved Richard was when writing about the Nutcrackers. All rather matter of fact - but some great insight for all that.
Well the wait for the 1st UK/ROI Nutcracker of 2026 goes on & on whilst Europe is weighed down by them. In the meantime, here's some prime 1968 archive.
The diary notes are Richard Richardson's + a short BB piece.
