Happy National Fossil Day! UCMP is celebrating the educational value of fossil collections! Here are some examples of Pleistocene megafauna from Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, similar to those found in White Sands National Park. Bison humerus, Camel lower jaw, and Tetrameryx teeth.

This is Dubreuillosaurus. Known from one fossil, the holotype. Described in Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology in 2002. Accessioned into France's national collection, the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris, as MNHN 1998-13. Now up for auction. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

Happy #NationalFossilDay 2026! Fossils connect us to the lands we live on and the ecosystems we're a part of. They show us that everything around us is part of a 3.5 billion years story that's still ongoing. I just think that's magical. ☮️❤️🦣🦕

It's #NationalFossilDay in the US! This year the site of interest is White Sands National Park in New Mexico, US, where human footprints document the earliest confirmed record of people in the Americas. Not coincidentally, a new paper on these fossils is just out! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... 🧪

The 2026 National Fossil Day artwork depicts a scene of Late Pleistocene fauna that were known to walk this former wetland environment. Large Ice Age animals roamed the area, leaving behind body fossils as well as trace fossils, such as the tracks seen in the corners of the logo, depicting giant ground sloths, short-faced bears, camels, and saber-toothed cats. In the illustration, Columbian mammoths are observed from the background. They stood up to 14 feet tall at the shoulder and sought the area’s plentiful vegetation, such as the depicted shrubs, to satisfy their herbivorous diets. Numerous localities in and around White Sands have documented the presence of mammoth tracks, and the round to ovoid impressions are described as resembling those of living elephants. Other animals in the artwork include western camels (Camelops hesternus), which looked like their modern relatives and grazed over large ranges, and a native North American horse that fed primarily on grasses and has a close relationship to modern zebras. In the foreground is a family of short-faced bears, enormous omnivores that stood up to 11 feet tall on two legs. The bear family’s prints are left in the soft sediment and intersect with human footprints, representing similar examples found across White Sands of the coexistence of humans with these megafauna. Prints of mammoths, camel, bison, and other taxa have been recorded stepping atop human prints, and vice versa. These prints have been recorded many feet above other human and megafauna prints laid earlier in geologic time, showing that they lived concurrently for thousands of years.

I recognize this replyguy is showing a particular kind of toxic benevolent prejudice. But it's also sexist against men? Sheridan le Fanu, Ted Chiang, Terry Pratchett, Kazuo Ishiguro? Sex is a poor heuristic.

There's a guy in my replies who says he doens't read women because they write well about emotional conflicts and unrequited love and that's not what he wants. He reads sci fi he says. Can you imagine reading sci-fi and not reading Octavia Butler? Or Ursula K Le Guin? Or NK Jemisin?

Thanks. This is great and really well said. I'd argue that it's the same for the American version of the University too - similarly reclaiming something initially created for the nobility to serve the citizens of the nation. And being attacked now for comparable reasons.
