For hobby stuff, it is somewhat simpler. Ultimately the pride and fulfilment from doing it is the reward. On a professional level it's hard to call. Fast moving. Unknown. Are you in a job where learning to leverage Ai effectively (ie: actually deliver) would put you at an advantage?
I decided not to use Ai to make my games. This is the fun part of it. I think I'd only get annoyed if I put in a load of effort making a game and someone spurted out an identical game with Ai before I released mine. But hey, does it really matter? Someone could do the same thing without Ai tbf. /2
There's some of this going on in the Vic 20 dev scene and I'll be honest that was my first reaction also. But I decided to look at it differently. On one hand more games can be good. Just as long as effort put in to complete them. /1
Take No Man's Sky with the modes of play. You can go extreme with permadeath, or unlock everything with no effort in creative. It affects no one else in real terms, but those players at both ends have fun from their experience. Do it because you want to, the way you want to and you won't go wrong.
I get that. But I would ask myself this: why do I want to make this thing? The answer should reveal if you should care what others are doing or using. In my case I do retro because I can, I enjoy it, It's fulfilling, I learn something. Being able to share it with other like minded folk is a bonus.
You mean my pristine copy of Cassette 50 and calculator watch is not gong to pay for my retirement home?
The CRT filter in Imagery.

There's a bit of history behind Imagery and you can read about it in this dev-log: hewco.itch.io/imagery/devl...
It's pay what you want, and you are welcome to grab it for free. If you'd like to support me and the project you can optionally add a donation via the download button.
My new graphics tool is called Imagery, great for editing graphics, creating animation or working on game tile maps. You can find out more on the website with the getting started guides:
So sad that it's reached this point. I don't work in that industry, but I have a good 6 years where threat of redundancy was often looming, not a healthy situation to live under. To do on this scale is crazy. I've mostly lost interest in consoles with &^%$ like this, barely hanging on with Nintendo.
It's pay what you want, and you can grab it for free if you want. I genuinely don't mind, but if you find it useful and wish to support me and the project you can come back to the download button to drop any donation you like.
Today I've released a modern graphics tool I have been working on for a while.
The tagline I've given it is "Perfect Pixel Art and Animation" which I think sums it up pretty well.
There's some memories in more than one way right there.
That slugg reminds me of someone...
New version of 8bit Pixel Lab for creating graphics and tilemaps for 8bit computer platforms.
New in this version are C64 sprites, Gameboy/Colour and sprites and now five BBC/Electron graphics modes.
Also supports Vic 20, C64, Amstrad CPC and Spectrum.
Testing the app, not sure what this is but it's right posh.
