In his letter, Comer brings up the case of infamous sandwich-thrower Sean Dunn, who was acquitted. Some argue that the jury acted as a check on what many said was a political prosecution. Is that nullification? Jurors voting their conscience? Something else good or bad?

The complicated thing is that while jury nullification is controversial and debatable, it's questionable whether it's actually illegal. Some argue it's a powerful tool for juries to reject what they may see as politicized prosecutions, which is a key question in D.C. right now.

"Jury nullification training courses undermine the rule of law, the safety of D.C.’s residents, and erode public trust in the justice system and our Constitution’s guarantee of an impartial jury," wrote Rep. James Comer in a letter demanding documents from the two groups.

The Republican-led House Oversight Committee has launched an investigation into alleged jury nullification initiatives led by @freedcproject.bsky.social and @harrietsdreams.bsky.social, reports my @washingtonsun.com colleague Jenny Gathright: www.washingtonsun.com/metro/house-...

Interesting: Here are details of the new contract that D.C. negotiated with the firefighters' union.

Three years of pay raises, two of them retroactive. Starting pay jumps to $68,003 from the current $60,131. Total package: $122 million over four years. lims.dccouncil.gov/downloads/LI...

Back in 2020 D.C. started requiring LLCs to disclose details of actual ownership, and as my colleague @zaraleinorman.bsky.social is reporting, the new fight is to get an actual human's name for every LLC so that the city can better enforce housing laws and find patterns in bad owners.

While D.C. had growing population and a booming economy, it was easy to paper over the obvious issues that have developed when you have two education sectors competing with each other. Population and money are now going down, so difficult conversations will follow.

@maustermuhle.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 2:11 PM

That also speaks to what many people told me: Whatever decisions are made about possibly closing schools in the future *has* to happen in a coordinated way between DCPS and charters. In the past those two sectors have almost only competed.

@maustermuhle.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 2:11 PM

In short, enrollment in individual schools can be very uneven across D.C. And that can create some obvious challenges if the city decides to close schools, since most under-enrolled DCPS schools, for one, are in wards 7 and 8.

@maustermuhle.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 2:11 PM

I've had people ask me about declining enrollment, saying that their specific school is bursting at the seams. And yes, it's true: Some schools in D.C. are over-enrolled, but others are very under-enrolled. Below are the schools below 50% utilization, and those above 95%.

A quick 🧵: Last week I reported on how a fast-dropping birth rate and fewer people moving into D.C. could eventually lead to enrollment issues in public and charter schools, and even prompt discussions about whether to close some schools. Story: www.washingtonsun.com/metro/dc-sch...

Reversible lanes are the worst, part 5,721: Drove my wife to work today, and on the way out of D.C. on Canal Road multiple drivers were unaware that reversible lane rules don’t apply on federal holidays. So, yeah, that was a rude awakening to see them driving straight towards me.

All hail the D.C.-area residents who go *all in* on Halloween, easily the greatest season of the year. (And these are just two houses I stumbled on this morning; I could probably find dozens more without much difficulty!)

I just got a response from the National Guard, which says troops “are directed not to monitor or secure polling locations” and is “addressing this specific instance.”

It could well be a coincidence that troops were standing near the Foggy Bottom ballot drop box, since it’s right by the Metro exit. But that people are concerned and the elections board is reacting reflects broader discomfort with the National Guard’s presence in D.C.

The D.C. Board of Elections says it’s asking the National Guard to avoid standing near D.C.’s ballot drop boxes, which opened today, in the wake of video footage showing them near a box in Foggy Bottom this week: www.washingtonsun.com/metro/nation...

The DCPS deputy general counsel told the D.C. Board of Ethics and Government Accountability that they made up the hours of teaching by working extra hours at DCPS.
