Mourning Cloak, Camberwell Beauty (Nymphalis antiopa). Among the longest-lived butterflies in North America and Eurasia. They pass on flowers to drink tree sap, boozy fruit, and bug honeydew. #butterfly #nature #biology #insects #wildlife

This photo shows the ventral view of a Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa), or Camberwell Beauty. Its bark-like, charcoal-black undersides with pale margins offer ideal camouflage against tree trunks and leaf litter.

Key Traits & Natural History:

Appearance: Dark, striated undersides with ragged cream borders; dorsally maroon-brown with yellow margins and iridescent blue spots. Wingspan is 2.25–3.5 in (5.7–8.9 cm).

Lifespan & Overwintering: Adults live up to 10–12 months, hibernating in tree hollows or bark to emerge early in spring.

Diet: Adults favor tree sap, rotting fruit, and aphid honeydew over nectar.

Host Plants: Communal caterpillars feed on willow, elm, poplar, and birch leaves.

Old-growth cottonwoods form rare riparian canopies—notably along the lower Rio Grande, where under 5% of native habitat remains. They shelter endangered and migratory birds, ocelots, and other native wildlife. #nature #ecology #environment

Myscelia cyaniris (Blue Wave / Royal Blue) butterfly native to Neotropical rainforests from Mexico to South America. Known for its brilliant iridescent blue-striped wings, adults bypass floral nectar to feed on fermenting fruit, tree sap, and decaying organic material. #nature #butterfly #animals

This high-contrast macro photograph shows a single butterfly (Myscelia cyaniris) resting resting flat against a weathered, greyish-brown tree trunk, positioned diagonally from lower-left to upper-right. The butterfly's wings are spread fully open in a top-down view. The upper surface of the wings features a striking pattern of alternating bold, horizontal stripes and dashes. Against a deep velvety black background, vivid royal blue and lighter powder-blue bands sweep across both forewings and hindwings. Black-and-Red Froghopper (Cercopis vulnerata). The bold black-and-red patterning serves as a warning to potential predators like birds that the insect secretes a bitter, yucky-tasting fluid. The raindrops are a fashion choice #nature #biology #animals #insects

This aerial photo captures Smugglers' Notch, a mountain pass in the Green Mountains of Vermont.

The narrow, winding road visible through the canopy is Vermont Route 108 as it cuts through the gorge between Mount Mansfield (on the right) and Spruce Peak (on the left) within Mount Mansfield State Forest. During peak autumn foliage, the dense hardwood forest—dominated by sugar maples—displays brilliant shades of orange, yellow, and red.
