reading this, recalling how quickly the killing of Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman slipped out of the news
What a joy to write a book with one of the best ones out there. The fight is long and things are not great when it comes to voting, but there are good folks on the journey
Anticommandeering is hardly an "unmistakable inference." Congress commandeered Southern states after the Civil War. Parts of the Constitution, e.g. the Elections Clause, explicitly authorize Congress to alter state laws. He's right that they invented a new limit on Congress in Printz.
the new book Supremacy is the most clarifying and clearsighted book about the Supreme Court I've ever read. and somewhat to my surprise it's by two Harvard Law profs! prospect.org/2026/10/05/o...
After listening to oral arguments in Suncor v. Boulder just now, I hope someone will give Justice Kavanaugh my @yalelawjournal.bsky.social Essay on the case. It provides a detailed history of Ouellette & the other precedents invoked in Suncor. These cases do not say what Justice Kavanaugh asserted.
Coming Tuesday.
From my introduction to the event, summarizing what I learned from this essential book:
Yesterday, had an illuminating convo with @daphnarenan.bsky.social about her book “Supremacy,” (co-authored with @nikobowie.bsky.social) with Don Verelli, who found the book as revelatory and surprising as I did — and he’s a former Solicitor General.
It's opening day of the Supreme Court session. A new book by @nikobowie.bsky.social & @daphnarenan.bsky.social demonstrate beyond question that the Constitution did not mean to establish a system of judicial supremacy in which the Court exercises dictatorial powers.
@ryanlcooper.com has a review.
I’m still floating from this by @leahlitman.bsky.social: “Every once in a while, a book comes along that is so transformative and so persuasive that it has the potential to shape our institutions and our democracy. Supremacy is one such book.”
“Every American, and particularly every Democratic voter, member of Congress, or candidate for office, must read this book.”
Thank you @ryanlcooper.com. Agreed!
Welcome!!
Many thanks to @ala-booklist.bsky.social!!

@leahlitman.bsky.social makes the case for Supremacy (the book, not the idea!) in @lareviewofbooks.bsky.social:
I'm grateful to Radcliffe and the Schlesinger Library for ensuring that my mom's work will be accessible to her many students, past and future
This Sunday!
If you're in Chicago, join me on 10/4 for a conversation about Supremacy -- @nikobowie.bsky.social and my new book -- with @petersagal.bsky.social and Don Verrilli at the Chicago Humanities Festival! Two of the greats, and I can't wait to discuss with them the case against ultimate judicial rule.
Thank you so much Dave!
