If you always choose the defensive side consistently, then after the 19th century you'd have a strong bias to support imperialism and /or colonialism because of what the world looked like. Some of that is still the case today, so sometimes you end up with support of imperialism intentionally or not.

If France invades Viet Nam people side with Viet Nam, if Viet Nam invades France they side with France. Where it gets baby-brained is people's behaviour in the scenario of France owning half of Viet Nam, but because Viet Nam in that sense "invades France" for that land they'd be the attacking side.

It is understandable only to an extend that people automatically side with the defensive side in wars, because it often matches with other criteria anyhow like distances or local populations etc.
