These questions are really testing graph sketching of step functions. The definite integral is only there to make it a multiple choice answer

Today's TMUA warm-up question

\int_0^3 \floor{x}\ceil{x} dx

You/they might like some of the puzzles/challenges at the end of my packs sites.google.com/view/sxpmath... 1.3 for surds and 1.4 for quadratics

Currently creating a workbook for A2 Differentiation and wondering at what point I'll give up ensuring every 'd' is non-italicised in equations... #lifestooshort

Also, thinking about what implicit assumptions we might make that aren't necessarily the case: eg these sequences need not be positive / monotonic etc

Just finished another TMUA session. Tried to convey that in a qn like this my mind juggles a combination of "this could be true so would need a proof" vs "this could be false so I need to construct a counterexample". Then try to pin down what the statements claim and what the constraint implies.

I paid for what I thought would be a nice edition of Rach’s preludes. Turned out to be an old edition with an updated shiny cover 😒

I like to _not_ show students that method, so they think I'm a sorceror who can do the whole 'long' method in my head 😂

I'm often pilfering from Edexcel IAL but have yet to explore CAIE. Thanks for the tip

Just spotted this AQA question (AS 2020) - nice tying together of skills

@sxpmaths.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 3:05 PM

Thanks!

@sxpmaths.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 12:55 PM

That'd be great if you wouldn't mind!

Please can I be another voice asking if you're willing to share these as PDF or similar, for clearer text? 🙏

To help a couple of students who have joined us for Y13, I've had to pick out exactly how much of the Year 2 content we actually cover in Y12.

Surely this data is skewed by native speakers. ~65% of A level Chinese grades are A*/A

I’ll try and think if there’s bits I can distil into a few tweets, but graphing typically trumps algebra in most Qs. Many integrals don’t actually need integration as such, for example. Trig equations often about num of solutions, rather than finding them etc

In bonus #MathsToday I worked with a student preparing for TMUA - looking at 2023 Paper 2 questions on necessary / sufficient conditions in many contexts, plus advice on how not to be intimidated in questions like this one. Great fun!

I'm also militant about getting them to label the two branches individually, but maybe that's just me... I find it helps with the solving process.

@sxpmaths.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 9:34 AM

I'd add a Type 4) range of values of a constant like part (c) of this question. But this is Edexcel, so maybe AQA don't do this kind of thing.

Does it tell you if students are lying? Sorry, haven't heard of it!
