Lil extra release for you today and a debut for my lap harp!

About being a little girl and then being a big one. Thwarted potential! Wrecked confidence! The quest for smallness in all forms, and at all costs, until you hit a wall of understanding.

Well that was very nice to hear, all hail Laura Beth!

If you'd like to hear the track she's talking about, here it is on Bandcamp (but also available everywhere else):

...You just know that this is a cool band. And the way the track kicks in, it just drags you in from the very start, doesn't it?"

Audio from Laura Beth: "That is a big tune. It's got little hints of kind of noughties' pop punk, it's got that seventies' rock and roll sound to it. I love the vocals, because there's attitude but there's like a nonchalance...a coolness about it that I don't think anyone can replicate...

Still wanging on about Loss Lines, track by track? Yes I am. Track 8 is 'Leave me', and a prickly, sad thing it is, too.

It's about experiencing a (temporary) intolerance of company, cheerfulness and attempted distraction in a time of loss ('don't laugh, don't smile').

Anyway, it's quite different to the rest of the record, and I like how it came out πŸ’•

I'm on vocals, guitars and bass, and filling in the other instruments on the MIDI keyboard.

Extra percussion, editing/mix/mastering is by @mountainsize.bsky.social (pictured)

@neverthebridle.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 5:08 PM

Some percussion is programmed, the rest is James working his new (back then) congas! I added a short section of electronic drums where the song comes to a swell over these lyrics: 'I don't know if I'm awake or asleep Swimming in this soup of disbelief Better to leave the grievers to their grief'

@neverthebridle.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 5:06 PM

The guitar takes more of a back seat here than usual to make way for some synth piano and percussion, and to let the plaintive main vocal line lead. I grounded it from verse 2 with a very simple bass parts.

@neverthebridle.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 5:03 PM

I start and finish the track with some synth marimba - love how James @mountainsize.bsky.social gave it an echoey tailing off at the end.

Can't remember the effect I have on that main guitar part, but I was going for a distorted, wobbly, unreal feeling.

@neverthebridle.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 5:00 PM

There are references to how unreal things feel in this sort of moment. That constant bad dream feeling where you wake up and remember again what has happened. It sucks, as you may already know!

@neverthebridle.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 4:39 PM

As a private, introverted person (who contradicts this by putting very personal songs on the internet!), I stand by the feelings in it. Sometimes you need to let a person work through their grief, innit. I was also thinking about how opaque medical language can be ('none of the words make sense').
