NEW: For 86 years, Missouri has held on to a nonpartisan system of selecting its top judges. But after the state Supreme Court overruled a gerrymandering attempt by the GOP, some Republican lawmakers are calling for the system to be overturned.
Since #Texas Gov. Greg Abbott first declared an emergency at the border in 2021, he’s renewed or amended the proclamation at least 69 times.

"[M]ore immigrant survivors are feeling like the violence and abuse they experience behind the closed door is ... more tolerable than the violence and abuse they could experience if they tried to leave[.]"
NEW: The women were victims of domestic abuse. That’s what they told police officers, attorneys and anyone who would listen. It didn’t matter. They were all taken to an immigration detention center.
Officials in Kent County, Mich., promised they'd stop handing over immigrants in jail to ICE w/o judicial warrant. That didn't happen.
Many of those arrested weren't charged w/ a crime - including women who say they're the victims of domestic violence.

And if you've got a tip yourself -- our ears are open.
Immigrants with harrowing accounts of domestic abuse were detained after contact with local police, sometimes after calling them for help. "I had suffered from domestic violence,” said one woman, whose daughter was still nursing when she was detained. “But the one who ended up in trouble was me.”
Nearly five months ago, I got a tip that opened the door to a group of women locked up at North Lake, the largest immigration detention center in the Midwest -- and @melissa-sanchez.bsky.social + I quickly saw a pattern in how they got there.
Backstory: "The Trump administration’s slashing of budgets and staff have Great Lakes scientists concerned that they have lost the ability to protect the public from toxic algal blooms, which can kill animals and sicken people." [spring 2025 ProPublica report]
The DOGE-ed NOAA Great Lakes lab "has been without a permanent director since ... early 2025. Jesse Feyen, the deputy director, is also performing the duties of the lab’s director. NOAA declined to comment on whether it plans to fill the role on a permanent basis."

"Records show the Texas attorney general has taken nearly 1,000 trips during his tenure, costing $3.3 million in security. We could only connect 138 of those trips and $553,000 in security costs to state business."

Last time we reported the 170 number, Kristi Noem denied the administration had detained any citizens. This time, we’re releasing the full list — and a host of video evidence — along with our story.
A year ago, @propublica.org told you immigration agents had detained more than 170 U.S. citizens.
We’ve updated our count, and we’ve got all the receipts.
The tally: At least 506 citizens detained. Sometimes held at gunpoint, handcuffed, or even deported.
I mean.

More than 64,000 ballots have already been returned in the Nov. 3 election here in Michigan, per the state's dashboard. That's just shy of 1% of all registered voters in the state more than a month out.
NEW: California is teeming with black-market dairies, propped up by consumer demand fueled by misinformation. With evidence against one raw goat milk farm, regulators could have sought punitive action. But that’s not what happened.
Former Navatek executives, meanwhile, looked back with awe at how far their money went.
“It was eye-opening for me, frankly,” said one. “‘Oh my God, all of it is for sale. It’s all for sale.’”

Collins’ office “vigorously” denied Kao’s bribery allegations, calling them “outlandish” The anti-corruption agents on the case were pushed out in Trump’s purge of the FBI. An FBI spokesman defended their ouster and said the bureau “ultimately found nothing” implicating Collins.
ProPublica is revealing the existence of the case for the first time. These are the kinds of corruption claims Trump’s DOJ ignores. So we did our own investigation—knocking on doors as far away as Hawaii, looking at thousands of records that got the FBI to take Kao seriously
