Howdy folks! Here's our writeup on the DDoS from last month:

Starting today, we're piloting Japanese magazines in our digital archive! We've spent the last few months upgrading our library infrastructure to support Japanese-language material, starting with the magazine Neo Geo Freak.

Someone also posted this to our forums as well!

Here's our article on what was known before this prototype was released! Most of it appears to be in the ROM.

https://archive.org/details/project-dream-snes_202609

Today, I’m releasing the SNES proof-of-concept alpha of Project Dream, the proto-type that would go on to become Banjo-Kazooie.

I’ve held on to this for years, it was fun to have something that only a handful of people had, and as I am several people removed from how it got out of Rare to begin with, I didn’t want to risk that it could somehow get someone else in trouble, (so how I got it is a story I don’t plan to share.) I will just say that I got it from someone who got it from someone, who got it from somewhere.

But with the current state of the industry and Microsoft's current heartless gutting and mismanagement of Rare and other companies it controls, plus with how long it's been, I feel it's more important to make sure this is properly preserved, and the ROM dissected by people with far more knowledge on how to do such things.

I hope by releasing this, that it also inspires other people to release what they have as well. I know the Twelve Tales Conker 64 prototype is out there somewhere, but sadly, this is the only thing that I have.

There is little joy left in the industry, as it relentlessly marches towards AI, layoffs, l anti-preservation and ownership tactics, and, in Microsoft’s case, the support and approval of literal genocide in Gaza.

Let’s get the last beautiful things hiding on our hard drives out there for everyone. That's all we have left.

Please delete Microsoft and Sony from your lives, install Linux, boycott Switch Game Key Cards and buy Nintendo Switch 2 titles that still come with the full game on the cartridge. Your dollar is the only thing that counts in our late stage capitalist hellscape.

The attached zip contains a .bin file of the raw dump, and then the same file renamed to a .sfc to work in emulators, as well as this text file.

Be blessed, and love each other.

I regret to inform you that they're at it again, pivoting to a new method. While Cloudflare mitigated most of the requests, at this scale, even 1% is enough to cause a disruption. We've adjusted the firewall rules some to hopefully maintain smooth service for real users. Thanks for your patience!

a chart from cloudflare showing a sudden spike in requests; about 15 million in the span of 20 minutes, or about 12,500/second

Our attacker finally seems to have learned that our sister wiki, Data Crystal, exists, and pointed their cannon at it. Data Crystal is now behind Cloudflare as well. For TCRF updates, we haven't seen any outage issues since swapping to Cloudflare, and more VPNs should be allowed as well.

As far as the DDoS situation goes, our host is still seeing attack traffic to our old (public) IP address, but our server is happily serving pages behind Cloudflare and our dashboard suggests things are going well :) In the next few days, we'll try to have a post-mortem report on what happened.

Cloudflare seems to have held stable over night, which is a good sign. We're still preparing for migrating everything, it just takes time because this is exhausting and we're still having to play defense. Did I mention it's still ongoing?

Latest from Linode:

    08:39 AM Hello there,

    Our team is touching base as we've been monitoring the attack traffic levels to your Linode; at this time the traffic has not subsided resulting in limitations being present on this IP address.

    We will continue to monitor traffic levels and remove the limitations once deemed safe.

    Thank you again for your continued patience throughout this case, we'll continue to keep you updated via this ticket.

Happy "four days of traffic so bad Linode had to shut off the fucking router" day.

is it normal when even Linode staff are telling you "this attack seems unusually sustained and targeted"

latest update on the @tcrf.net downtime situation

@tcrf.netAug 29, 2026, 11:33 PM

Linode has informed us that the attack is still ongoing against both our primary and backup server, so now we have a backup-backup server. Hopefully things resolve for good soon!

Latest news

Hello from Fastly! Linode has informed us that the DDoS against both our main server and our backup server is still ongoing.

So, now we have a backup backup server. :^)

While we can't directly mitigate the current attack — that's Linode's job (tugging collar) — we're doing what we can to work around it.

    They have also now confirmed that the DDoS attack traffic targeting your Linode IP has not returned to safe levels since its initial onset, which occurred about an hour prior (August 27 around 10:35pm ET) to you opening this ticket.

    Since the volume of the traffic is still high at this time, the DDoS mitigation block remains in place and will be removed automatically once the traffic to the IP returns to acceptable levels.

the back and forth with Linode continues ... from what I understand the attack has subsided, but now there's some other network fault at play that we're troubleshooting

@tcrf.netAug 29, 2026, 3:58 AM

Update from Linode... we're still waiting for the attack to subside. There's nothing we can do. We do have all of the files and data backed up, and can migrate if it comes down to it.

Unfortunately, Cloud Firewall wouldn't help in this specific case, since the block is happening further upstream, before traffic even reaches your Linode's own firewall rules. The most reliable path here is letting the automated mitigation run its course, it's specifically designed to lift once the attack traffic settles, and that's the resolution we'd recommend standing by for.

We're actively monitoring the situation on our end and will let you know as soon as we see things stabilize.
