You can see Huffman's full statement, which is fairly blistering, in the article. Everything I write is free, so anyone can read and subscribe. You can help me keep it all free by supporting me, if you can afford it, at this same link. Thanks for whatever form your support takes.

...military prosecutors told the jury the opposite of what Hegseth said: DON'T make this religious, even, or especially, if that's what Hasan wanted. Col. Mike Mulligan said Hasan's execution "is not his gift to God. This is his debt to society. This is the cost of his murderous rampage.”

@jonathanlarsen.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 9:26 PM

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation, @mikeymrff.bsky.social, said those same remarks raise "a galaxy of legal issues."

Not to mention the issues of handing recruiting propaganda to terrorists.

In fact...

According to Weinstein, Hegseth’s reference to an “Islamist” — or Islamic theocrat — in the context of the execution raises several issues. “Calling him [Hasan] a radical Islamist is the key to this whole thing. … it does create all kinds of issues.” And not just legal issues.

Livestreaming the execution “is a wet dream martyrdom scenario for Hasan,” Weinstein said. “It’s providing this unbelievable propaganda bonanza” for ISIS and al Qaeda.

Hegseth on Thursday said he was making the execution public in part because it was a "radical Islamist" attack. But U.S. officials are barred from considering religion that way, let alone from targeting one religion for special punishment.

EXCLUSIVE @rephuffman.bsky.social tells me that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's remarks about Nidal Hasan's executions raise legal issues with livestreaming it.

And that they merit Hegseth's impeachment.

He was great. I'm conflicted/biased, as Sorkin came to observe us at Countdown and some real-life me stuff ended up coming out of "Jim"'s mouth... ...to the point that once I predicted what was about to happen cuz I'd done it for real at Countdown. Got to meet John, though, and he was super cool.

Over the last decade, there were two hypotheses: H1: the political right genuinely cared about threats to speech from the left. H2: they were using campus speech wars to impose their values and silence dissent. Today, the answer is clear, but I can't find any of the H1 people admitting their error.

After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

In other professors’ syllabi, the bot flagged the Pulitzer Prize–winning play Angels in America by Tony Kushner, essays by the Mexican American MacArthur genius grant recipient Sandra Cisneros, and materials related to a class about the Holocaust (that professor was told to drop material regarding Nazi persecution of LGBTQ people).

Putting aside the ideological slant of the new rules, the bot, like many large language models, seems to “hallucinate,” or make mistakes. The AAUP lawsuit lists texts banned for their “sex-based ecofeminist framework” and “gendered ecofeminist frameworks.” These phrases might sound persuasively like academese, but the academics behind the lawsuit had never heard of them; these concepts “do not exist,” the complaint says. Matthew Pehl, a history professor at Tech, told me that he knew several people who’d received reports from the system that were “plainly written by an AI that had hallucinated content or confused content from one class to another.”

With this kind of logic you’d almost assume he’d blame the victims of other kinds of assaults. Oh, right.

If you are on an escalator or moving walkway in an airport and you are standing on the left (or worse, in the middle), you are a bad person and you should feel bad about yourself.

Awesome takedown of one the clueless mindless "reactionary centrists" fighting hard against every really doing anything different after Trump.

"Maybe Suozzi’s friendships with far-right Republicans made him feel pressured to take a stand against democratic socialists. Suozzi literally lives, secretly, in the DC townhouse for members of Congress run by the Christian nationalist Fellowship Foundation, aka The Family.

@jonathanlarsen.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 7:33 PM

The corporate media that hooplahed PTA haven't covered its fizzle. But why did it fizzle? My story explores possibilities, including billionaire donors, but the simplest explanation could just be that it failed because it wasn't well done and Suozzi liked talking about it more than doing it.

@jonathanlarsen.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 7:30 PM

Here are PTA's numbers of signatories, vs. the stated goals: Candidates: 4 (down from 5 since one lost) vs. 20 Members of Congress: 10 vs. 12 State reps/sens: 6 vs. 200. These numbers haven't changed for weeks or months.

@jonathanlarsen.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 7:08 PM

In fact, Suozzi used a trite line about centrist Democrats wringing their hands at cocktail parties about democratic socialists, but not doing anything about democratic socialists... ...that I created a tracker to monitor his use of the line. The question is, though, was it effective?

@jonathanlarsen.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 7:07 PM

Keep in mind, Suozzi's PTA has been boosted by Matt Yglesias, Axios, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, CNN, Fox, and more.

@jonathanlarsen.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:59 PM

When Suozzi launched Promise To America he announced goals for getting signatories. A dozen members of Congress. 20 candidates. 200 state and local officials. Then he claimed he always only wanted 10 members of Congress. So, how's PTA doing now? Four months after its public launch?

@jonathanlarsen.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:21 PM

Thank you!

@jonathanlarsen.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:21 PM

NEW: With less than a month until Election Day, how is Promise To America, Rep. @tomsuozzi.bsky.social's anti-democratic socialism group, doing?

He got huge corporate-media coverage launching it. And now?

Well, the headline's a spoiler, but God is in the details.
