St John’s, Duxford - empty, preserved, and a theatre of shadows. Double exposure Polaroids, with a single exosure playing gooseberry in the middle. The grand west window shadow, overlapped with close ups of red flowers left on a window sill. They work, but composition lessons to be learnt here.

The aisle of an empty, light filled church, superimposed with a small bouquet of flowers in a glass vase.

(There is too much north window in the flowers composition - the criss cross of the leading is too distracting, and takes the eyes away from the photo’s strength - the aisle of pews sitting underneath the flowers)The Nave of an empty church. The shadow of the west window sits exactly - a great sun of window - between the pillars leading into the chancel. The rest of the church is shadow and memory of the shape of all churches.Another double exposure. This time the thin stone door to the (long missing) roof screen is overlapped with the flowers.

(But it’s a confusing image - and not overly interesting in its confusion. I turned the camera upside down, so the stone door is upside down, and the flowers are too close to the camera - so they are blurred, and once again that damn north window is there, a bully of focused perfection, dominating the image)

“It was about one hundred years ago this month.. that Ruth Wynne, a young woman tutor, and her charge Evelyn Allington, saw a Georgian mansion in between the Suffolk villages of Rougham and Bradfield St. George that wasn’t there the following spring. It had apparently vanished.”

“Friedkin lets it breathe. He is telling you, before a single American has appeared on screen: this is old. It’s older than you, older than your country, older than your church. You aren’t the first to meet it and you won’t be the last.”

According to Wikipedia: ‘The creature's constant motion produces an eerie grinding sound that suits its task. The hour is tolled by the sound of a chain clanking into a small wooden coffin hidden in the back of the clock’ !!!!

Went to Cambridge Poetry Festival today, about thirty years since I arrived as a fresher at Kings, and noticed this is now opposite - an EVIL LOCUST CLOCK that EATS TIME! (bit on the nose)

FWIW, book sales are steady for me in October so far, rather than spiking upward.

“Did a skellington write this?” asks my other half.

No need, that's what the crouching was for.

This is still going. Replies are mostly people questioning their grasp of reality, including, inevitably, some who don't know me wondering if it's AI-generated. (Obviously not.)

Now watching: ‘Nightmare’, AKA ‘Here's the Knife, Dear: Now Use It’, dir. Freddie Francis, 1964. 🎬🎥

A poster for the film with various people in states of terror, a big old dagger, and the tagline: “Three shocking murders – did she dream them?”

Me looking at the menu board in the chipper

A truly terrible looking hedgehog cake with malteser eyes and chocolate fingers as spikes. The worst part is the gums and teeth.

Now watching: ‘El Topo’, dir. Alejandro Jodorowsky, 1970, which superficially resembles a spaghetti western but... is not. 🎥🎬

A poster for the film showing a man in black on a horse. Hes holding an umbrella. There is a little kid riding on the back of his horse. In the foreground, buried in the sand, is a picture of a woman in a gold frame.

BLOG POST: “We’re not fans of sofas in pubs. We sink into them, they make us drowsy, and they make us feel as if we’re at home. Not in the sense of homeliness; as in, why did we bother coming out?”
