Late summer 1785 the Surrey JPs seek to crack down on the 'enormities' perpetrated in the county, setting their sights particularly on ale houses: 'one of the greatest sources of... corruption and debauchery'. All constables are summoned to have the rules read to them so they cannot plead ignorance.
Following @georgianfun.bsky.social's groundbreaking research on John London, the earliest known Black voter in Britain, more research has gone into discovering instances of Black political participation in the 18th century, as Dr Robin Eagles investigates.

Punctilious to the end, the 8th earl of Westmorland did not let a minor matter like death interrupt his regular routine. Despite being off his food, he attended dinner every day till the day he died, finally being "taken suddenly on Tuesday last as the second course was serving up"...

We like to feel that the Georgians could be pretty polite, too, when they wanted to be.
This morning we welcome a guest post to the Georgian Lords' series.
Amanda Westcott considers the importance of George III's return to Oxford following the failed assassination attempt by Margaret Nicholson in 1786.

Our third anniversary post explores the history of the GHIL’s home at 17 Bloomsbury Square. 🏛️ Laid out in the mid-seventeenth century as one of London’s first formal garden squares, the corner house at No. 17 was remodelled by John Nash in 1777–78. 1/3

We've had an example of the earl of Galloway officiating on at least one occasion. No particular indication about why he (as a Scots rep) was selected.
Following the death of the 4th duke of Ancaster in 1779, some lawyers argued that no one under the level of knight could officiate, using the (somewhat dubious) example of Sir Thomas Erpingham under Henry IV (walk on role in Henry V). Peter Burrell was knighted hastily to deal with the problem.

There is a brilliant overview of the history of the lord great chamberlaincy, and how the Ancasters came to hold it, by @jspan.bsky.social over on his dukes and princes web page.

New piece on the block leads us into the interminable debates over the lord great chamberlainship. Commenting on the 1902 case, Horace Round declared:
"in my own experience... I could only say with good reason: If this is law, give me history"

By the 18th century the earldom of Westmorland was held by the Fane family. In spite of the title, their lands were mostly to be found in Northamptonshire and Kent. John, the 7th earl, was a soldier, a disciple of the duke of Marlborough, but later went on to be chancellor of Oxford University.
Of course, this was not the palace's first clock tower. Spare a thought for the old, mediaeval, tower and its most famous bell, Old Tom, which could be heard as far away as Windsor (apparently)...
