URGENT
I'm in deep financial trouble. My salary is compromised with loans that I used to pay older bills and debts, and so now I'm unable to pay for rent, and the landlord has started the eviction process. Help me pay this rent so I don't end up on the street!
...Cut them out and it would've been overall a solid selection of segments. Now we just have to wait until next year for the SCP one and whether or not the studios understand the legal issues with using the foundation's work or if they're just going to file off the serial numbers to avoid all that.
...that it was focused around sound and music, but the inclusion of the first two segments kind of mucks with that. Sure, there's the song in the puppet one, but it's not ABOUT the song - it just features a song. Overall, I'd have been much happier with it without all the GWAR interstitials...
...editing and sound design are top notch, the deaths are gory and horrific, and it just really comes together well. It strains the found footage credulity at many moments, but it's still a very entertaining watch on its own. Theoretically the whole anthology - why it was called Mixtape - was...
...footage. The final segment is easily the best - "Death Tone," about a woman who is following instructions left by her famous, talented music producer father on how to create the perfect sound - doing so by murdering people and using the sounds of their deaths to mix together a song. The...
...but it's fine - telling us about a woman who uses a chemical to make her boss seem dead and he's buried alive, a flashback revealing that he actually raped her and then when he manages to claw his way out of the grave, she knocks his head off with a shovel. It's fine, but again: not found...
...and points to biker dude for trying to punch out the Lovecraftian creature. He fails, of course, but you know what it takes gumption to look at Cthulu and say "I'M GOING TO KNOCK YOU ON YOUR ASS." "Premature Burial" is a music video and really not fitting with, again, the found footage stuff...
...camera glasses and filming people without their permission (one biker dude in particular adamant about not being filmed). He accidentally ends up summoning a Lovecraftian monster when he investigates his upstairs neighbor's violin music, which seems to keep the Lovecraftian creature at bay...
...a more traditional V/H/S short and rather entertaining for the most part, able to parse what's going on in the story though our main character's acting is not great - something about his line delivery is just very unnatural. And he loses likeability points right out of the gate by using...
...but putting aside that anechoic chambers actually apparently have some therapeutic potential for relaxation, what we see is two people panicking, screaming, writhing around in pain, gibbering, and eventually dying and it's just not that entertaining to watch, IMHO. "The Music of Mr. Sze" is...
...the tape recorder is saying and they get locked inside the chamber, going insane from hearing all the tiniest noises until one guy stabs himself and the other discovers she's pregnant and starts to eat her dead boyfriend. Using an anechoic chamber like this is an interesting horror idea...
...concept than execution. I give it credit that the two leads aren't assholes as one might expect, a loving, thrill-seeking urban explorer vlogger couple who clearly love what they do and go inside an old Soviet bunker, finding an anechoic chamber and a tape recorder. They never translate what...
...about death is an earworm and I quite liked it, plus all the fun puppetry in general. "Another Cabin" is a neat little stop-motion animated short and it's entertaining enough, but just feels out of place in an anthology about found footage shorts. "Heartbeat" is another one better in...
...evil creatures or just something that helps better explain what the hell just happened. Honestly might have been better if they didn't go COMPLETELY demonic and just have the puppets come to life and murder the team (as well as a poor intern who didn't deserve her fate). Admittedly, the song...
But hey, let's move onto the actual segments. "Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance" is better in concept than execution. The puppets made by the Jim Henson studio are great, but the story feels incomplete - like we're missing key details about the main puppet guy or the backstory of the puppets being...
...lead us into each segment? I know there are only so many ways of doing that, but even when we've had framing devices so many of them have been disconnected from the segments and this one isn't even a framing device - they clearly just filmed GWAR in scenes that feel improvised or first draft.
...this one is just weighed down HORRIBLY by the decision to have GWAR "host" the film. And hey, if you're GWAR fans, more power to you, but crimeney their segments were obnoxious, unfunny, and annoying and I hated every time we cut back to them. Can we get back to framing devices that actually...
Just finished watching V/H/S/Mixtape, which I didn't even know was going to be a thing until I noticed a listing for it and it premiered on Shudder like a day or two ago. Honestly thought the SCP one was next. And it is... a mixed bag, to be sure. I mean, yeah, anthology movies tend to be, but...
Reposting in case anyone missed it. Really happy with the reaction it's gotten so far ^.^
