But mostly in the sense of the original 1913 novel Pollyanna, which urged optimism-driven action in the face of adversity. Courage my friends, 'tis not too late to make a better world.

@hugobookclub.bsky.socialI should note that the novel Pollyanna is much better than its saccharine reputation. It connected deeply with 1910s audiences who were coping with a pandemic, global conflicts, and an exceptionally racist U.S. president. But perhaps this is not something that would resonate with today's readers?
