It’s probably the eeriest photo I’ve got in my camera roll

@metjam.co.ukOct 11, 2026, 12:54 PM

Somewhat with the naked eye - could just about see the structure of the first ray in twilight but the rest were more like diffuse areas of glow that seemed to get brighter and dimmer. Me and my mate were constantly pointing at different areas

Northern Lights from Bishopstone on the North Kent coast, UK, 10th October 2026. Put on an excellent show for a good hour from 19:30. Definitely a 'wow' night. @metjam.co.uk #aurora #northernlights #auroraborealis

There's some nice proton aurora a couple seconds in that I've only just noticed now when watching it back - appears for a couple of frames - takes a lot of pulling out detail to see it properly in one frame.

A timelapse of the aurora from the University of Reading Whiteknights campus last night from 19:20 BST to 20:32 BST - processed with LRTimelapse and rendered in DaVinci Resolve.

Cumulative "population days" of exposure to temperatures >20c, >25c, >30c and >35c in the UK. No matter how you slice it, it's been warm - although for exposure to the >mid 30s temperature, 2022 is still the year. Also (in 2nd plot) - September has continued the record-breaking trend!

Shameful this

@metjam.co.ukOct 10, 2026, 9:24 PM

A more impressive feat tonight was the aurora actually breaking through twilight; this developed as I put my camera down on the ground at 19:22 BST here in Reading. I wish I could have seen the substorm expansion about an hour later in darkness - would have been truly nuts.

Was rather impressed to see them on campus @mathewjowens.bsky.social

Aurora from the University of Reading Whiteknights campus at 19:40 BST this evening - it was weakly visual by eye.

@metjam.co.ukOct 10, 2026, 8:25 PM

About to encounter a period of +Bz, may help trigger another substorm in the next half hour.

@metjam.co.ukOct 10, 2026, 6:46 PM

Never thought I’d ever see the aurora from the campus here - good times

AURORA FROM READING

@metjam.co.ukOct 10, 2026, 6:17 PM

Aurora beginning to show up back home in Herne Bay

@metjam.co.ukOct 10, 2026, 5:53 PM

Aurora down to 51ºN in Germany

@metjam.co.ukOct 10, 2026, 5:50 PM

Stats are collapsing a bit - photographic/weak visual aurora stance holding strong here 👍

@metjam.co.ukOct 10, 2026, 5:40 PM

It continues to rock the casbah viciously

@metjam.co.ukOct 10, 2026, 5:32 PM

53ºN is lighting up like a Christmas tree - very promising signs for weakly visual aurora when dark if things don't go totally to pot

@metjam.co.ukOct 10, 2026, 5:24 PM

Aurora expansion just now at 53ºN, this will probably happen again when dark

@metjam.co.ukOct 10, 2026, 4:06 PM

@mathewjowens.bsky.social if you can summon the -40 Bz I would greatly appreciate it thanks
