The Godwins rose from nowhere to become richer than the king. Then Harold Godwinson was shipwrecked in Normandy and swore an oath to Duke William on holy relics. The Bayeux Tapestry shows the scene, but what did he actually promise?

In a Yorkshire valley, a Saxon sundial is dated "in the days of King Edward and in the days of Earl Tostig." Within a few years Tostig's own brother had betrayed him, and the old English world was gone. Episode 2 of The Norman Conquests is out now.
