Doing the ShakeOut earthquake drill today? This drill recording may help you make it just a touch more realistic.

@emd.wa.govOct 15, 2026, 4:43 PM

Reminder that unless your local government is testing their own system, the wireless emergency alert system will not be used today on your cell phones.

Our best defense against earthquakes starts with practice! Practice Drop, Cover and Hold On before the next earthquake strikes. If you live along or visit the coast, also practice walking your tsunami evacuation route to high ground. Learn more at mil.wa.gov/tsunami

🏈 Hey 12s! You’ve caused earthquakes in the stands before (remember the Beastquake?) Before the Seahawks tackle the Broncos on game day, Oct. 15, let's tackle earthquake preparedness!

At about 10:15 a.m., more than 120 Washington tsunami sirens along the inner and outer coast will be tested using the real wailing sound of a tsunami warning. DO NOT CALL 911. EAS will sound on radio & TV. Wireless Emergency Alert text system on cell phones will NOT be tested. Graphic has more.

Headline says: “GREAT WASHINGTON SHAKEOUT ALERT TESTS.” WHAT ALERTS COULD I GET ON 10/15? You may get an alert, If you have downloaded the MyShake app, on Broadcast TV and radio, NOAA weather radio, Tsunami sirens, Tri-Cities outdoor warning sirens. You will not get an alert from on your phone frm earthquake early warning sources, wireless emergency alerts, no alerts from Streaming TV and radio, satellite radio, no alerts from Pierce County lahar sirens. Your city, county, and/or tribal government may also test their local emergency alert systems as part of the Great Washington ShakeOut. Check with them directly to confirm if you will receive an alert on 10/15. Emergency alerts are tested as part of the Great Washington ShakeOut to ensure the systems are working and to help the public be familiar with the kinds of alerts they may receive in a real emergency. If you receive one of these alerts on 10/15, take this opportunity to take the protective actions you would in a real emergency. Drop, cover, and hold on - and if you’re on the coast, walk your tsunami evacuation route.

Mission Accomplished! (As long as "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is stuck in your head as earthquake safety advice, too!!)

@emd.wa.govOct 14, 2026, 7:55 PM

Great point, always be aware of your situation when (/before) you Drop, Cover, and Hold On! We were trying to emphasize that being on the stairs themselves, with all those rigid corners isn't a safe idea and heading to the landings is better.

@emd.wa.govOct 14, 2026, 4:06 PM

It might feel or look silly to Drop, Cover and Hold On – but the practice will help you protect yourself in the next earthquake.

ShakeOut starts at 10:15 a.m., Oct. 15!

If an earthquake struck while you were on a boat, what would you do? What would it feel like? What are the potential dangers? Brian from our office has advice as he stands on a local ferry.

If you happen to be on Washington’s Coast near one of our tsunami sirens, they will be tested at approximately 10:15 AM using the actual “Wail” sound they will use during an emergency. Not the usual Westminster Chimes sound used during the monthly tests: mil.wa.gov/tsunami

A blue and white graphic which says, “Washington’s tsunami sirens are tested at noon on the 1st Monday of every month with the Westminster Chimes. The sirens are also tested once a year in October with the actual warning wail sound as part of the Great WA ShakeOut. When you hear the tsunami siren wail, evacuate inland to high ground. Go on foot if possible to leave roads clear for emergency vehicles and people with mobility needs. The Great WA ShakeOut is the only day of the year you will hear the siren wail as a test - a good opportunity to practice your evacuation route!A blue and white graphic explaining Washington’s tsunami sirens alert the public to distant tsunami threats in outdoor places like beaches where it may be hard to get other alerts. The sirens are an outdoor alerting method and not meant to be heard indoors. Washington has more than 120 tsunami sirens along its outer Pacific coast, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Salish Sea, and in the Puget Sound as far south as Edmonds.
