Ss crazy as it is, I think you can unfortunately be both.

The fact that wyvern rider is functionally a different unit from pegasus rider in Three Houses and Fortune's Weave makes them a "promotion path" silly to me. There have been so many rider units where their mount is a core part of their character, and you can just take the mount away? Crazy!

Chapter 9 or 10 should be the start of Paralogues. But also they are very annoying and have strict timing so even if you are in the chapter they are available you may not know about them because you aren’t in Dagsion when they are active. Which ones are available and the timings also vary by route.

If you have a really strong unit you want to take all the hits because they will easily absorb damage, but don't want them killing enemies so that your other units can get xp?

The constant skirmish unfortunately doesn’t change. The story and map design do change as get into the true participating in the games. Whole final chapter is a highlight for me but understand if you don’t want to tough it out to get to it.
