These mountains belong to all of us, I’ll keep fighting to protect them for generations to come.
That’s why I introduced the San Gabriel Mountains, Foothills, and Rivers Protection Act to permanently protect more than 35,000 additional acres of wilderness and more than 20 miles of wild and scenic rivers.
And in 2024, after our continued advocacy, President Biden expanded the monument by 105,919 acres to include the western Angeles National Forest. These protections matter more than ever as Trump and Republicans try to strip away environmental safeguards and open our public lands to development.
12 years ago, President Obama acted on my call to designate the San Gabriel Mountains as a National Monument, permanently protecting the lands we cherish so deeply.

That's why I led 29 of my colleagues in demanding answers from the Trump administration. These decisions determine whether people can return home to their families or remain behind bars. They must be based on the law, not political pressure.
Even more troubling, reports suggest immigration judges have been required to justify granting bond to their supervisors. Yet when advocates sought records, the agency overseeing immigration courts released heavily redacted documents.
Under the Trump administration, more immigrants are being denied release from ICE detention, and those granted bond face amounts their families simply cannot afford. Bond denial rates have surged from 36% in 2024 to 55% in early 2026.
Because no family recovering from a wildfire should have to wonder whether the home they're returning to is safe.
With this funding, Dr. Tissot and his team will bring scientists, insurers, and affected communities together to help close that gap and improve how we assess and respond to contamination after wildfires nationwide.
For families devastated by the Eaton Fire, the question of when their homes are safe remains urgently unanswered. Lead and other dangerous contaminants pose serious health risks, yet families still lack clear, science-based guidance on when they can safely return.
I was proud to present @caltech.edu’s Dr. François Tissot, an Eaton Fire survivor, with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition for receiving an NSF award to advance critical research on toxic contamination following wildfires.
These conditions violate the most basic standards of health, safety, and human dignity. Adelanto is beyond reform. We need to shut it down NOW.
Even after a court order requiring improvements, court-appointed monitors found: ⚠️Mold ⚠️Gnat larvae ⚠️Worn, cracked mattresses ⚠️Improperly filtered water ⚠️Dirty ventilation ⚠️Inadequate accommodations for people with disabilities
For years, I have witnessed the inhumane conditions endured by people detained at the Adelanto ICE Detention Center.
I joined The Raid w/ John Carlos Frey to discuss my decade-long fight to shut Adelanto down. The people detained at Adelanto deserve dignity, due process, & accountability. I won't stop fighting until this facility is shut down for good.

ICE has blocked me from conducting oversight at Adelanto TWICE since Trump’s second term began -- despite my legal authority to do so.
We will keep fighting these closures. These irreplaceable pieces of history deserve to be kept with the communities whose stories they tell.
For all Californians, particularly the AANHPI community, the National Archives in San Francisco & San Bruno have helped preserve the stories of their loved ones. Moving these records across the country would force families to travel thousands of miles just to access their own history.
