(Here's the essay by @bessbell.bsky.social the quote is from; recommended reading if you're struggling w/mental health issues, or w/government & social pressures making it difficult to pursue medical treatment for them)

I printed this test (verrry carefully on a Vandercook given paper thinness) back at Penland in July, but didn't get to try lighting it until now. Final will have more exact cuts, no paper/tape overlaps, etc. but now I know what to expect from paper opacity & floral wiring.

"Read zines!", alongside some of my free zines (ZineBakery.com/homemade), printed w/my 1st DIY lasercut type (acrylic Bungee Inline, Tweaked). From my letterpress 🎨 archive.

This is one of the more "make bad art" school of things I've made, & it was such a joy (& challenge, to build overnight from what's on hand light enough to float, & that won't tip over in the wind). Excited to make more things that interact w/outdoors, including more polished installation-sized art:

@literaturegeek.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 11:45 PM

Lots of shore-related printing to go with the "what if letterpress but floating?" I didn't get my July letterpress-kite & in the air yet nor my printed lanterns lit, so it was nice to actually test out one of my unusual-location ideas.

The boat not only floated, it made it alone overnight on a windy lagoon without tipping/sinking. Here's the originally intended larger glitter sail (etching press to allow larger paper size, wood type, mica powder, sealant) & shore banners gauging the breeze

@literaturegeek.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 11:45 PM

Wasn't sure if the boat would be light enough or windproof enough until I got it in the water, or if it'd tilt, get printed sail wet, sink. Had to scrap plans for larger glitter sail; used 6 soda bottles, 2 airfilled ziplocks, hotglued branches for buoyancy & frame.

A very-DIY looking toy boat with letterpress-printed sail floats successfully on sunset waters, near an old wood dock where I'm lying on my back, my face from neon yellow glasses up visible at the bottom of the photo. The boat has a roughly 3x1.5' foot print and is about 2' tall, with a tan kraft paper sail ("be excellent to one another" in purple from wood type) and colorful ribbons, hot glued branches, empty soda bottles, and airfilled gallon ziplocks forming the frame and buoyancy mechanisms.Two ziplock bags plump with air and taped shut with bright green electrical tape, labeled in permanent marker "TRANS JOY :)" and "TRANS POWER <3"The toy boat while being hotglued together in a printshop. Nice! I loved this class

@literaturegeek.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 12:18 AM

Course says it'll stay open after that date until seats fill—but it was a joyously full class for the course when I took it a couple years ago, & I expect that interest has only increased.

@literaturegeek.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 12:18 AM

If you're interested in running a student-centered book arts/printing makerspace ("emphasis on institutions w/more modest resources"), I took+recommend @mkirschenbaum.bsky.social & Kari Kraus' "Building a BookLab" online class, happening again this January. Apply by 11/1 for best chance of seat
