Deliberating before taking a stance on a political issue can improve how others view your character, but only if they disagree with you

When people share the same views, deliberation tends to have little effect on how their character is judged by their allies.

In overruling Edmonton's elected council, Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams actually said that those who supported the bylaw were "unAlbertan and UnCanadian." The hypocrisy of Danielle Smith complaining about federal overreach at the news conference was next level.

The UCP wants you to get bogged down on the policy debates around infill. Don't be fooled. Their intrusion into local democracy reveals something far more troubling to folks across the political spectrum.

"The province’s dalliances with recall, petitions, and referendums have only empowered narrow factions, weakened representation, and distracted government."

Ken Boessenkoool and I make the case for ditching direct democracy in Alberta.

Here is my recent interview with @ouralbertadvantage.bsky.social founder Avnish Nanda, who joined @carterab.bsky.social and @jaredwesley.ca for a conversation about fighting the noxious nine. #saynotothenine

I didn't mince my words. Alberta's anti-immigration referendum questions are racist. They are also a potential disaster for Alberta's economy. Last night, I rose in the Senate to denounce them - and to thank all the thousands of Albertans fighting against them. Please share. #notothenine #cdnpoli

This shift among separatists coincides with their abandonment of all things Danielle Smith. They have something in common with federalists. Everyone should vote No to the Nine.

@jaredwesley.caOct 3, 2026, 3:44 PM

Some U.S. figures openly back Alberta’s separation or annexation. The White House says it made no commitments. In short: separatists promise Alberta sovereignty while offering Washington oil and water, and importing Republican campaign tech that exposed nearly 3 million voters’ data.

@jaredwesley.caOct 3, 2026, 3:44 PM

Michigan Republican operatives travelled to Alberta to pitch separatists on 10X Votes, software for identifying and mobilizing conservative voters. That software inspired the Centurion Project, which let users search Albertans’ names and addresses.

@jaredwesley.caOct 3, 2026, 3:44 PM

Alberta separatist leaders met U.S. officials three times. One co-founder says they discussed oil, water and other resources in exchange for help; another leader disputes that account.

More confirmation and details of the deep ties between Alberta separatists and Trump Republicans. They are part of the same far-right populist movement. And the Americans are deeply involved in promoting disunity in Canada. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...
