Remember, there are no "rogue" AIs, merely improperly coded and regulated AIs. As such, the owners of AI should be liable for their actions as if said owners acted personally and directly.

This Week's Common Weal Magazine

Our crowdfunder is past 75%!
www.commonweal.scot/crowdfunder

Graph of the Week:
University debt hasn't been due to declining international student numbers.

A line graph of new entrants to Scottish universities since 2020.
Domestic Scottish students are down slightly and EU students down substantially but rUK students and international students are stable and rising respectively.

UNIVERSITY FUNDING CRISIS ISN'T EXPLAINED BY OVERSEAS STUDENTS
It is received wisdom in Scotland that the funding crisis in our universities has been caused by fall in fee-paying international student numbers. That is not borne out by the facts. Unless the funding crisis was caused by something that was done in 2021, international student numbers are still more or less at their all-time peak. The 'neat' student explanation suggests the cause of the crisis is an unavoidable external factor, but there is no evidence that stacks up that argument.
If fee-paying overseas students are in any way responsible for the current problems it can only be because universities did more than seek to recruit them, they gambled on the market expanding indefinitely and invested accordingly. If so, that is reckless gamble which has backfired badly. The data suggests that the funding crisis is a combination of public funding being cut and poor (sometimes reckless) financial decision-making by university leaders. All concerned seem determined not to have that conversation. International student numbers look more like a convenient excuse than an explanation.

When the state commits violence visibly and with enthusiasm, what they are saying is "this is what we'll do to you if you step out of line".

In fairness to Russia, when they complain to states, countries don't pull out of supporting counterdisinformation conferences, so maybe "after Russia" isn't 100% accurate.

What is the IceCube neutrino observatory? Neutrinos are elusive particles that rarely interact, but can create flashes of light when they do. Most neutrino detectors are giant water tanks surrounded by light detectors. IceCube is kilometer-long strings of detectors embedded in the Antarctic ice.

'Continuing to reduce pensioner poverty while maintaining fairness across generations and between pensioners and workers won't be possible without reining in the financial sector and private pensions, while also decapitalising housing.'

Workplace reforms should be built by workers

See my article here: www.commonweal.scot/articles/mag...

I'm not convinced that the state pension can be further reformed without tackling the private pension sector.

ScotGov should investigate what it can do there with devolved powers. Possibly a publicly-owned "single-payer" workplace pension?

Imagine if we were using that "excess" to heat our homes instead of using gas.

@thecommongreen.scotOct 3, 2026, 7:14 PM

(It's on my list for after we refresh our indy Prospectus)

@thecommongreen.scotOct 3, 2026, 7:14 PM

Exactly. A large part of our 2019 Common Home Plan was built around district heating networks with large inter-seasonal thermal storage for precisely this reason. Mind you, we didn't foresee how cheap electrical batteries would get so that plan may need an update and refresh.

@thecommongreen.scotOct 3, 2026, 6:29 PM

Their owners will instead demand to be highest priority - they will demand that you will sit in the dark before their AI data centre has to turn off.

@thecommongreen.scotOct 3, 2026, 6:29 PM

A counter-curtailment industry would ramp up when supply exceeds demand but also ramp down or even switch off when other demand exceeds supply.

AI Data centres will not do this. To understand why, pull the plug on your PC while you're updating the system.
