This is a pre-air, spoiler-lite review of the whole season. We'll also have episodic reviews once the show debuts tonight, written by the great @sambarsanti.bsky.social! An old-school Will-And-Sam team-up! Sort of!
OH HI I WATCHED EIGHT HOURS OF TV YESTERDAY SO LUCKILY IT'S GOOD avclub.com/visionquest-...
I would love for the government to issue a voucher for One (1) Therapy to every American adult to process their associations between wearing a mask and The Bad Times because being able to walk through 3,000 strangers' loose respiration without catching a cold kicks ass, actually.
On the one hand, yes, it's silly that the one piece of swag I've allowed myself at two consecutive PRGEs has been a Shadowgate Game Over Skeleton. On the other, the Shadowgate Game Over Skeleton is the most kickass memento mori pixel art ever, so...
I got my dopamine for today when a little girl and her dad were struggling to make Donkey Konga work and I let them know they needed to be clapping for the blue starburst notes, so everything from here on is looking for old Infocom game boxes/gravy
Walking around Portland Retro Gaming Expo today (say hi if you see me!) and I try not to judge on stuff like this but y'all are DERANGED for not masking up at things like this.
fascinating
Reminder that I'm not streaming tonight because I'll be at the Duckfeed meet-up here in Portland! If you're in town, come watch me stretch my limited social tools well past their breaking point!
WHAT'CHA FILLIN'S?!
I was being a little self-indulgent and looking through old Game Theorys today (I've been writing the column, under one title or another, for eight years at this point! That's like 400 columns! Ridiculous!) Anyway, I'd forgotten this headline and it made me laugh

Very sad that I'm at work today and can't watch this in-depth dissection of floor chicken live.
And while the game has some narrative cruft attached to it, I love how much fun its villains are having. This lady is a demon mad scientist who takes zero things seriously, including casually picking up a corpse's head to use as a ventriloquist dummy during a cutscene. Real "delicious evil" shit.
One thing I wish I'd gone into in more detail here is the way Onimusha boss battles create discrete, meaningful moments - sudden blade clashes, mix-ups of attack styles, and an ever-present sense that you're seriously IMPACTING your opponents - so that the whole thing doesn't turn into same-y mush.
I've really been loving Onimusha: Way Of The Sword (which is, among other things, often genuinely funny!) But most importantly, I have missed starting a boss fight in a big action game this year and being genuinely excited to see how the fight plays out. www.avclub.com/game-theory-...
Game Theory, @plumberduck.bsky.social's weekly column, is holding things down @avclub.com on Saturdays. Check out the latest edition, now with some custom art by @nickwans.bsky.social
Streaming tonight at 8 p.m. PT, as we continue to whimper our way through Resident Evil: Requiem. This time: Girl Delivery!
A small programming note for the subset of people who follow me because of games writing: We're going to try running my Game Theory column on Saturdays this month, so the new one will be out tomorrow. BUT! We also got a new badge for the column from the great @nickwans.bsky.social. How cool is that?
Does anybody recognize the O in this logo? I clocked that the A has a little S.H.I.E.L.D. eagle but the O is stumping me.
Recommended: Hearing Keith David do a great big Keith David laugh over the telephone
Could be complete horseshit, or another way of feeding ourselves into the Big Tech woodchipper, but won't you join us in seeing if we can get around all the ways Google broke its most useful product? www.google.com/preferences/...
