Idle political musing: UBI ultimately wont affect jobs much at all, rather unlock the true humanist reward - usefulness, connectedness and purpose A scant few will never work and … good for them! Feels like yet another level up in civilisation if you ask me—decoupling morality and productivity

Connie is a stone cold rock star and as someone who playtested this at Hasbro I can say it’s cute as buttons. LIL TURLSSS 🐢🐢🐢

I know it’s a rough time to be asking for money, and ignore this if you don’t have the means But the folks at Nibcard are doing amazing things for gaming against impossible odds.

We only hired a full time developer for AGOT TCG after a year in print. Also insane, but we didn't know any better. I wrote a weekly design column for both AGOT TCG and Call of Cthulhu TCG for about 3 years before burning out. Still have fond memories of those days. The communities were so tight!

For the Game of Thrones TCG (the original design the LCG is based on), I was designer, developer, producer, art director, web content creator and half of the organized play leadership. The AGOT TCG went from initial meeting to "files to printer" in 4.5 months. Utterly insane. Still proud of it.

I consider myself an okay-to-decent party game designer, but an excellent party game developer. I did "inventor relations" for 3 publishers, evaluating thousands of games over maybe 6 years combined. I have so much respect for those who can excel at this role without losing their soul (I cannot)

@ericlang.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 2:53 PM

I do not enjoy learning new games, and despise reading rulebooks to learn new games. This gets worse every year, and honestly I think this makes me a stronger designer. I'm on record as saying most game design "best practices" today are BS. The discipline is too young.

@ericlang.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 2:51 PM

I still get starstruck over certain old school designers like Wolfgang Kramer. I remember meeting him and his wife years ago; they had no idea who I was and thought they were getting ambushed by a fan. They weren't wrong :) I love collaborating, and also recognize I'm difficult to work with

@ericlang.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 2:45 PM

My most innovative designs have never been published. Junior game designers often massively overvalue innovation. I was no exception. I have designed at least seven "entire new genre" type of games. I think maybe two of them are any good.

German is my mother tongue, though I don't speak it often anymore. But when I go to Essen each year in October, it's a helluva codeswitch - by the end of a week or more, I struggle with English a little. It's wild. The best design teams I've ever worked with were primarily women. Almost no drama!

@ericlang.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 2:29 PM

Most of my best known games, I designed the first draft in less than 24 hours. My superpower is that I'm very bursty, but need lots of downtime for meditation and reflection I never transcribe rules for my games, no matter how complicated, until we're in late development.

@ericlang.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 2:22 PM

I don't read comments, though there is a persistent annoying rumour that CMON just pasted my name on a bunch of games when I worked there. In fact, I did a lot more uncredited design work than credited. My proudest games take me years to finish, but total heads down time, maybe a couple months

@ericlang.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 2:18 PM

I interviewed with Wizards of the Coast three separate times and got the job, but was unable to obtain the visa to work on site. My first professional encounter with the legendary Reiner Knizia was to reject one of his games for FFG. His reaction solidified my eternal respect for the man.

@ericlang.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 2:15 PM

Almost every game of mine from FFG is much more complicated than my original design spec I was lead designer on a Michael Jackson MMORPG (you heard that right), which never shipped, thank god. (The game concept was actually pretty rad, though) I still have far more unpublished games than published

@ericlang.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 2:12 PM

I have hundreds of design credits on BGG, and I think maybe a quarter of them are expansions I did not design, for games I designed. XCOM the board game only has my name on the cover, but it should also have Nikki Valens and Lukas Litzinger, who were more co-designers than developers.

@ericlang.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 2:08 PM

The industry has always been pretty toxic and unprofessional. Back in the day, we designers kept passion alive though camaraderie with my teams I once wrote an email to a CEO saying only "fuck off." Nothing else. I still have crushing guilt over older designs I feel like I didn't respect enough

@ericlang.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 2:03 PM

Blood Rage was going to be a completely different game in completely different IP, until I met Adrian Smith. I once designed a game for my wife. She wrote the rules, and they were published unedited. I have great love for 99.99% of my peers, though there are some big designers I despise personally

@ericlang.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 1:59 PM

I have at least twenty uncredited developer roles on some pretty big games. My best selling game of all time doesn't have my name on it. A publisher once printed my formatted word doc rules in a final game I once did a convention panel so sleep deprived I blacked out and have no memory of it
