This interactive is amaaaazing. Some great SVG animation stuff + good UX. Hurting my brain figuring out how I'd implement that map-to-dotplot animation

Forget the soccer mom. Enter the "overtime mom," or “steel toes and tamales.”

We crunched the numbers, and this is what we found on the demographics in battleground House districts: www.washingtonpost.com/politics/int...

This year's battleground districts are also *not* more suburban than the country as a whole. Or more rural.

Instead, battleground districts are full of small cities -- like Greeley, CO, where Jen lives -- with high homeownership rates.

But why now? One Republican pollster, Whit Ayres, called it a "distraction" from other issues: "Focusing on Muslims and sharia is easier than focusing on gas prices and war in Iran. It’s not complicated."

NEW: U.S. states don't have sharia law.

So why do politicians keep proposing laws to ban it?

Bar chart of annual bills and resolutions mentioning sharia in state legislatures and Congress, 2010 to 2026, where counts stayed at 8 or fewer through 2024, then rose to 15 in 2025 and 24 in 2026.

Corruption is a central issue of the midterms, with both Democrats and Republicans mentioning it in their ads--more than any issue other than the economy. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Everyone’s talking about the economy. No Republican is mentioning Trump. On other topics, the political parties are pretty split on what they are emphasizing going into midterm. Analysis from Lydia Sidhom and Luke Connors:

has anyone looked at a map of texas lately? very big

@ence.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:58 PM

such a cool analysis... *half* the Republicans in competitive races have *never* aired an ad this cycle mentioning Trump!!

Republicans are taking an unusual approach to campaign ads about Trump. Republicans are airing about half as many ads mentioning or showing Trump as Democrats. Trump appears in Republican ads in half the competitive races, while Republicans are aligned with him in advertising in less than half the races.
@ence.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 12:27 AM

Here come the cavalry for the Dems. $22.7 million (!) from American Bridge, backing Democrats, across lots and lots of races just came in.

Biggest targets include Texas Senate ($3.7M) and... Florida Senate ($2.5M, mostly on billboards). Lots of other races too.
