Bosnian Serb nationalism would not have been racist if Bosniaks and Bosnian Croatians didn't exist. Zionism would not have been racist if Palestinian Muslims and Christians did not exist. But here's the problem for both: They did and do exist!

The thing is: Palestinians are a people with equal rights. Bosnian Muslims are a people with equal rights. You cannot oppress and slaughter these people as compensation for crimes you've suffered.

Serb nationalism and Zionism are very similar. Serbs and Jews were both victims of Nazi genocide in WWII. The nationalism of both fused victimhood with chauvinism. Both nationalisms argued that they were merely rectifying a historical wrongdoing their peoples had suffered.

In WWII, the Serbs were victims of genocide at the hands of Croatian Nazi collaborators, the Ustaše. In the 1990s, their justification for ethnic cleansing? "The Serbs were once majorities in these lands, but genocide ended that. We must now rectify that historic wrong."

Like every settler-colonialist movement that has ever existed, you need a justification. "Why do we deserve this land, unlike the people who actually live there now?" The basic justification for this always, well, racism. By actual definition!

When the Zionist movement was promised Palestine by the British Empire, 90% of its people were Arab Muslims and Christians. The Zionist movement of the era echoed the colonialist mantras of the time to justify taking the land away from the people who actually lived there.

There is nothing racist about any ethnic or religious group wanting their own homeland. The problem is if this desire is at the expense of another people. Zionism in practise meant "a homeland at the expense of Palestinians". It's really not hard to grasp this basic point!

Two million pensioners live in poverty. We spend less on pensions than other rich countries. Yes, we desperately need a National Care Service. Don't make today's workers poorer in their old age to pay for it!
