This was entirely foreseeable, and many of us warned that if the Department abandoned all of its principles, the decent public servants in its ranks would abandon the Department.

This post kind of blew up yesterday. I think Americans really want to know about little things they can do it help people while our government is doing violence to our values, interests, and allies. So I will try to help provide guidance that might be useful for people who want such direction.

This is easily one of my favorite box sets, ever. The recording of “In the Wee Small Hours” might be the best since Ben Webster and Oscar Peterson’s version.

This essay easily influenced my political views and philosophy more than anything else I’ve ever read. It was once a bedrock of conservativism, and I bet the average Republican now couldn’t even tell you who Oakeshott was or why he mattered.

These are politicos who cheer on, for example, Ron DeSantis’s efforts to destroy his state’s institutions of higher education. They’re the sort of people who believe that some books’ highest value are as props for a public burning.

I’m pretty sure that the MAGAsphere’s understanding of the classical world comes from Grokipedia and not the original sources.

Along with an Eames chair in which to read it.

My birthday is coming up, and I've been meaning to reread "Moby Dick," so I would very much appreciate a copy of the 1979 Arion Press edition. I'd obviously prefer near fine or better, but beggars and choosers and all that.

Authoritarianism is less likely to take hold when the population visibly refuses it. Use your voice next weekend.

I’ll move it closer! I often forget.

In light of today's latest idiotic announcement from Kash Patel that UFC will officially begin training new agent trainees, I'm reposting a few of responses to his similar, previous efforts.

Less than two weeks until this arrives.

@amber-tee.bsky.social’s point below is 100% correct; “Suspiria” isn’t even Argento’s best movie (that honor clearly belongs to “Deep Red”).

Now why is Luca’s SUSPIRIA catching strays here when it’s superior to the OG?

Your gentle reminder that the selection at @bookshop.org is just as good as at Amazon, and that using them doesn’t enrich someone who’s never missed an opportunity to fall on his knees and kiss an authoritarian’s jackboots.

Seriously, what’s the point of “fuck you” money if you’re this servile?

This is an important and necessary reminder, and I completely second the recommendation to read Havel's essay. (I'd also add in Milosz's "The Captive Mind.")

Welsh rarebit or nothing. It’s grilled cheese, but for grownups. Grilled cheese, itself, with fig jam, bacon, and tart apple slices also works.

My wife just called me "snooty," and I'm genuinely wondering how on God's green earth it took her this long to notice.

The odd thing is that the administrators and politicos behind this seem like the type who would just love the Han Feizi or the Book of Lord Shang.

This is a great opportunity for law students, particularly those of conservative temperaments who utterly revile what the current administration has done to the rule of law and the agencies which should be enforcing it.
