I write reviews for Locus Magazine. I had a podcast called Writer and the Critic which I co-hosted with Kirstyn McDermott. The episodes are out there. I love the Carlton Football club. What more do you need to know!?

I missed this when it first came out. Glad it got a US publication so I could cheat and review it for Locus.

I'm not saying that SH is influential, but of the six books shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize today, we've reviewed The Vivisectors already, have Dooneen coming on Monday, and pieces on both The Rouse and Said The Dead are on their way. Specfic is living high on the hog this year and no mistake.

Don’t let us stop you :-)

I mean, I’ve read this far…

@mondyboy74.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 8:25 AM

Yeah. I’m gonna take a dip. Maybe with The Employee.

@mondyboy74.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 8:19 AM

Ooooooo. They do look very good.

@mondyboy74.bsky.socialSep 28, 2026, 8:32 AM

I have finally read The Iliad. I now have permission to read the rest of literature.

So narrow minded. So silly.

This advice is a bit late now!!!! But thanks.

My first Brookner and it’s marvellous.

Explore @mondyboy74.bsky.social’s review of EARTH 7 by @debolinunferth.bsky.social: “Unferth’s novel isn’t a cautionary tale… it’s an elegy for everything we are on the verge of losing.”

Loved the first one. About to start the second.

Jeff is correct. I’m reviewing the third book for Locus—Stories Like Illness.

If you have even the vaguest interest in Doctor Who then plonk down some money for this fucking awesome newsletter. James is, of course, an argumentative prick who enjoys Star Wars far too much, but his knowledge of Who is impeccable. I’m a recent covert and I look forward to the weekly email.

@mondyboy74.bsky.socialSep 16, 2026, 9:33 AM

Yes. True. But the Mieville wasn’t in the store I went in!!!!

@mondyboy74.bsky.socialSep 16, 2026, 5:05 AM

To be fair, I get 98% of my books in enook format. I would have broken my arm if I’d read The Rouse in hard copy.

@mondyboy74.bsky.socialSep 16, 2026, 4:27 AM

HA! You and me both.

@mondyboy74.bsky.socialSep 16, 2026, 4:04 AM

Thank you!

A part of me feels like I need to spend a year reading these guys. Like J. Penney and Devney Perry and Stacey McEwan and Thea Guanzon and Max Francis and Heather Fawcett (all new authors to me). Then common sense prevails. But feel free to tell me which ones I should pick up.

@mondyboy74.bsky.socialSep 16, 2026, 2:52 AM

I will say that there’s a whole swathe of SFF authors in the bookstore that I’ve never heard of. Like Barbara Truelove and Nisha J. Tuli and Grenwich & Lennox and Sierra Branham and Lex Croucher. I am so in my bubble.
