and Badenoch had lots of emotive things about the physical home in her speech (shared Christmases etc...)

In effect yes. But why obsess re family house as opposed to just hiking cash thresholds

@jillongovt.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 2:08 PM

certainly no IHT -- would need to check social care asset rules

@jillongovt.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 2:56 PM

If we could stop abuse that would be better

@jillongovt.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 8:36 AM

I thought you were suggesting it wasn't

@jillongovt.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 8:23 AM

well London is in Europe because they are here as well

BTW if you have spare billions to spend on tax reforms, lots of better pro-growth tax reforms to spend it on. But memo to all politicians - we really don't have billions knocking around to decide how to spend. Not even once you have "adjusted" the triple lock. Sorry.

by doing this Badenoch also undermines her (much better) policy last year of scrapping stamp duty on house sales. One would free up the housing market. The new policy would put it into deep freeze. More on the behavioural impacts here from @danneidle.bsky.social taxpolicy.org.uk/2026/10/08/c...

there is minimal evidence that inheritors in their 50s and 60s are desperate to move into their parents' former home. My @instituteforgovernment.org.uk on why Kemi Badenoch's policies are for the world of Downton Abbey - not the one we live in now www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/kemi...

So rubbish

Also, if you genuinely think IHT is immoral because it means taxing wealth twice / taxing aspiration / the human urge to pass assets down to children or whatever, it shouldn't matter what form those assets take. Encouraging people to treat property like a wealth bank rather than a home is bad!

Question to academics and economists out there: how many children who inherit houses from their parents worth over £ 650k (double inheritance tax threshold) or £ 1m do not already own their own home? @arunadvani.bsky.social @helenmiller.bsky.social @timharford.ft.com
