St. Sabina Catholic Church in Chicago has placed more than 100 crosses outside the parish. Each bears the name of someone who died in ICE custody or during an immigration enforcement action. Union workers built the traveling memorial, which began at Holy Name Cathedral last month.
Hope Markwayne has his stress ball handy!
Btw, I expect it will be a big week of 287(g) program news.
Yep, there are so many orgs who've lost federal grants in the same communities who are now watching ICE buy their local PD a new cruiser and a platoon's worth of thermal binoculars. It's sick.
"Gonzalez Carbajal has been in federal immigration custody since September 29 after he was pulled over on his way home from his soccer game. The Noel Marshal's Office said deputies initially stopped him for suspected speeding and determined he did not have a valid driver's license." 287(g) arrest.
We're just handing out $100K+ checks from the federal government to every rural police agency that wants one. This town's population is about 200 people.
Like clockwork.
How convenient. "Rokita wrote that Indiana law gives police chiefs operational authority over their departments and that neither the state’s Interlocal Cooperation Act nor procurement laws require town board approval for a 287(g) agreement."
"The letter responds to Monroe County commissioners’ Resolution 2026-36, which questioned whether the agreement had been approved through a public vote and asked the Stinesville Town Board to suspend work under it while the board considered the issue."
On Sept. 25th, Indiana AG Todd Rokita signed up his own agency for a Task Force 287(g) less than 3 weeks ago, and suggests every Indiana sheriff should also sign up. On Oct. 6th, Rokita issues an opinion that keeps a small town's (pop. 202) agreement active despite lack of town board authorization.
"Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has concluded that Stinesville’s police chief had authority to sign the town police department’s agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement without prior approval from the town board." Again: how convenient.
If I was a fascist, this would be part of the plan. But I’m not, so I’ll fight this new fascist Klan.
If I was a fascist, I’d emphasize the cruelty — then hide from public in(tro)spection. And if I was a fascist, I’d threaten violence and say it’s for your protection.
If I was a fascist, I’d ship immigrants in boats. And if I was a fascist, I’d try to tamper with your votes.
If I was a fascist, I’d preach “western values” even when I’m in eastern Greece. And if I was a fascist, I’d have a years-long feud with an award for making peace.
If I was a fascist, I’d obsess over soldiers’ looks — I’d want them big and scary. And if I was a fascist, I’d threaten to “fix” our cities — even à la military.
If I was a fascist, I’d livestream executions to encourage extra fear. And if I was a fascist, I’d probably want new uniforms, just to make it super clear.
Bozeman, Montana (Gallatin County): "The current Sheriff endorsed an improperly signed 287(g) to actively cooperate with Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the local detention center. This endorsement gives cause for our friends, neighbors, and ourselves to distrust our law enforcement."
wtf is this. Basically just "Oh, the majority supports this agreement but none of them will show up or voice this publicly, so you'll just have to believe me. And please ignore the group of real neighbors who showed up to voice their displeasure."
