Just saw that Chris Wickham has passed. Incredible historian, an absolute giant of medieval history, one of the most original thinkers of the last few decades, someone whose work will always be in my head and heart. May he continue tracking the distribution of African Red Slip in the great beyond.

He’s going to look great when he’s disheveled, shackled at the ankles and wrists, standing in front of a tribunal like the criminal bully and thug he is

New Past Lives: Leprosy, Plague, and Life in Anglo-Saxon England. In one small cemetery in Cambridgeshire, a place called Edix Hill, we can see everything from the ties that bound a young disabled woman to her community to the impacts of a continent-sweeping pandemic.

The day they were doing trenches at the field and I couldn’t interest the five-year-old boys in soccer over dirt was a real turning point in my life

Patrick does a great job of bringing the human side of Edix Hill’s disease experience to the fore. Can’t recommend this episode enough!

Ahhh thank you! I think the novel-writing is making me better!

I remember reading about the young woman afflicted with leprosy, whose community cared for her as her condition worsened and then buried her in a bed (a rare practice), about 15 years ago. I've always wanted to write about her and understand her world, and in the process, I found new plague studies!
