I don't know how to use linkedin and don't care to learn. I just log on every few weeks, accept every "connection" invitation I receive, and then close it again.

+ While I can’t tag all the folks whose work is featured this week, I did want to highlight a couple here. Josh Lambert & @dan-sinnamon.bsky.social wrote an excellent deep-dive for Jewish Currents on PEN America’s report on antisemitism in publishing. +

Woke up this morning from a dream remembering a kid I went to HS with, played trumpet, was pretty dour. Hadn't thought of him in 20 years. Looked him up, only thing I found was his Facebook. Just cat memes and the assertion he went to Hollywood Upstairs Medical College, a joke from the Simpsons

"The counseling office checks graduation requirements.

Wash U has been working to get software to do the same job. System cost the school $99M to implement. At that price, the school could have hired 20 work-study students for well over a century."

Very disappointed to hear this about Europa. Human translators are a vital part of making a book accessible to a foreign audience. Bad enough not to credit them on the book cover, but to replace them with a clunky ai version is just an insult to the profession and the reader

More than two dozen workers at three major publishing houses—HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Hachette—tell WIRED that LLMs are being used for publicity, cover art, back cover copy, and emails, as some execs push junior staff to champion the tech.

Incredible podcast. I've been listening for one year, from the very beginning. Truly one of the great works of cultural criticism this century.

With the spate of new trade books about data politics & too late capitalism, I fear this one might be getting lost in the shuffle. As important as Big Tech & Silicon Valley VCs are, you can’t understand the present without attention to the restructuring of capital around fund managers after 2008.

I have some news! I am now the news reporter for the New York Times Book Review, covering the publishing industry, the literary world and the books we read. After covering real estate for the Times for more than a decade, I am so excited to start this new chapter. www.nytco.com/press/a-new-...

Really enjoyed this piece, which implicitly suggests another good reason to support small and university presses as much as you can: many of them are the ones willing and ready to take chances on nonfiction books that big five publishers are more than ever too scared to take on.
