Been reading Randy Boygoda's new campus novel. It self-consciously resists tired tropes of the genre, but also reveals how hard it is to full subvert them. But maybe the best part of the novel is how it situates data science at the center of prestige laundering, propaganda, & outright fraud.
I can highly recommend listening to @nbedera.bsky.social speaking on campus rape culture & lack of action

I also am co-editing with @llassabe.bsky.social the book, Degrees of Liberation: Public History, Campus Activism, and the Fight for Educational Justice, under contract with SUNY Press. It examines Native, African American, Latine, and other groups’ activism as public history in higher education.
Had a great time w/ @llassabe.bsky.social talking about how private equity, real estate, and other industries have captured our boards of trustees + how that shapes the teaching and resarch in schools of design + climate/energy policy centers americancampuspodcast.buzzsprout.com/2396665/epis...

Interesting deep dive here. I'll add that for all the assumptions out there about MAHA, young men (left) are significantly more anti-vax than women (right), and more hostile to academic science.

Keep an eye out for university events featuring them as speakers as well. This will be an important step towards laundering their reputation and returning to power.

Occasional reminder that the right-wing attack on higher ed, including the push for "viewpoint diversity" and "civic education," is largely a racist backlash against an increasingly non-white college-going demographic.
Honestly the whole thing does feel haunting
We have to start a folder of most insane AI pitches
Two types of academic correspondence are “apologies for the delay but I’ll need more time” and “hey do you wanna do this thing with me three years from now”
The conflation of AI-critical with technophobic is tactical & infuriating. While accusing us of just knee-jerk hating tech, they’re enshittifying search engines, degrading digital archives, sundowning or enclosing popular tools, etc. We were all happily using that tech!
THREE CHEERS
I cannot really explain to someone who hasn't been steeped in this stuff for awhile how sudden and total the "go to college and get a good job" edict has collapsed. It's a vaccuum. And we know how nature feels about those. All we are throwing in there at the moment is A.I.
