I like Jonathan’s idea for mayoral work visas. Not just good for local economies, but also would create a system where people made a positive case for immigration and access to international talent, rather than perpetually performing reluctance.

These are such sensible ideas for the Budget. (Editor: Dream on, son...)

The Tories’ line-to-take on this - namely that it’s plagiarising policy they announced last year - is nuts: even if it were true, it’s utterly at odds with Badenoch’s attempt at Conference to convince voters that there’s a fundamental difference between the Conservatives and Reform. #MakeYourMindUp!

Another on the list of "things that are obvious from the evidence yet ignored" is "current immigration policy will deliver a great big hole in future budgets". The OBR currently assumes net migration bottoms out at 200k then rises. That isn't going to happen

A 29-year-old woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said the high levels of unemployment were “noticeable” in the area.
“When you go into Somali town, as we call it, you just see people outside in the cafes,” she said, gesturing down the road, before adding: “It annoys me, they are loitering around and doing nothing.”
Addressing her own career path, the 29-year-old said: “I can’t work at the moment because of my mental health. Of course I want to work, I went to uni and studied English Literature for two years. I want to be a writer.”

Think there was a time under Starmer where Labour wouldn't have talked about decency and values in relation to this so progress of sorts.

Mine: a partial devolution of work-related migration policy:

The Budget should give combined-authority mayors the power to create local work visas for recent university graduates, allowing them to retain international students and other young skilled workers.

The current system is excessively centralised. National salary thresholds and occupation rules take little account of differences in local labour markets, wage levels or growth strategies. A job paying £32,000 may be entirely viable and productive in Sheffield or Newcastle, even if it falls below a threshold designed around national or London wages, while the impact of new migrants on housing markets or local services will vary.

Mayors should therefore be allowed to sponsor a limited number of recent graduates who have studied in the UK, have a job offer in their region and meet locally determined salary or skills criteria. Visas could initially be tied to employment within the relevant combined authority, with a route into the national Skilled Worker system after two or three years.

We still recall the outcry when the possibility of de-funding UKICE was first floated a few years ago. Obvs everyone recognises that research funds are limited & need to cover diverse needs. But again today: the loss of UKICE will be felt significantly: they've done a huge service to UK politics.
