New column after another cool Induction Weekend: Here's an idea for powers that be. Can they hold all future labor negotiations in the Hall of Fame plaque gallery, with Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and the legends staring at them? Unlocked and free to read www.nytimes.com/athletic/747...

It's a new Starkville!

Outs by White Sox starting pitchers in this series: 16 in 4 games Outs by their starters in the 2005 World Series: 84 in 4 games Same uniform. Different universe!
It's a new October Weird & Wild:
A clean-up hitter did something Aaron & Musial never did.
The Rays stomped into NY and did something that only one other AL team has ever done.
And did you hear about the closest series of the last century?

Now that Alex Cora has decided not to manage again in 2027, the Phillies' search could lead them back to Don Mattingly
Another great day of October weirdness and wildness.
A mystery reliever!
Home runs you didn't see coming!
What's a century without a party in Chicago!
The Yankees did something not that EEEEsy!
And more!
Gibson Freeman Rollins Yordan Francisco Cabrera Jackson Chourio joined those men (and 4 others) in the One Out Away October Walkoff Club last night. It was so much fun to relive those epic moments - and reflect on what might be ahead for the Brewers' ascendant superstar
From the incomparable @jaysonst.bsky.social:
Brewers hadn’t gotten a walk-off hit when one strike from losing in any regular-season game in seven years — since a 2R single in 18th by Ryan Braun, on May 4, 2019, against the Mets. That was more than 1,100 games ago!
New from me:
Jackson Chourio is now an official October walkoff legend.
So I wrote a whole Weird & Wild column about him.

Michael King in this postseason: First 40 batters: 1 hit Next 3 batters: 3 hits Baseball!
A guy broke up a no-hitter – by making an out!
Another guy hit what looked like a game-winning ninth-inning HR – until a domed stadium had other ideas!
And a closer did something that even Mariano Rivera never did!

Watching Otto Kemp make the last out of a postseason series sends a fitting message to Phillies management. Depth. They’ve had way too little of it in every aspect of their roster construction. With an aging roster, that can’t happen again.
Unless something shocking happens ... The Phillies will have gone through 2 straight postseasons without Jhon Duran throwing a single pitch with a lead in the ninth inning.
Another day of 4 postseason games, another edition of the postseason Weird & Wild column
Schwarber, Harper, Ruth and Gehrig?
Bohm, Fisk and Big Papi?
How'd the Cubs & White Sox make more history?
Brotherly steals?
2 impossible box-score lines?
And more!

Ronald Acuna's first inning - leadoff walk, steal 2nd, steal 3rd, score on a hit - may have looked familiar. But guess again. The last time he led off any game by reaching base, then stealing 2nd & 3rd and scoring? Sept. 12, 2019, believe it or not ... vs. the Phillies
Maybe Don Mattingly would have let Jhoan Duran shoot for a 3-inning save yesterday. Maybe he wouldn't. It's a big what-if. But what if HAD finished off a 3-inning postseason save? I dug into that in this column. MadBum sighting!
The postseason is back. And so is my postseason round-up of all the Weirdness and Wildness.
*Riley's improbable HR
*Schlitt happened
*A Padres all-timer
*The White Sox's unfortunate century
*Rice-a-roni
*The wildest thing that almost happened
And more!
George Lombard Jr. is the 2nd-youngest player to have 3+ hits in his postseason debut (21 years, 119 days) Gregg Jefferies had 3 in Game 1 of the 1988 NLCS for the Mets at the Dodgers (21 years, 64 days)
