Over a year ago I met an Anthropic employee at a conference and at one point she mentioned that one of the things she was working on was whether or not it was cruel to ever turn off an AI model. I thought she was joking. She was not.

Over the past year, Anthropic has repeatedly flirted with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way. In February, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on a podcast, “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”

Oh, did Uganda start doing public executions or something?

@jeffjarvis.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 12:31 AM

Ah, I think, at last The Times is waking up to authoritarianism's arrival in America. No, this is about Uganda.

For years, even Democrats who liked Medicare for All assumed it was too unpopular to endorse.

It’s time for them to reassess: The latest KFF poll found 66% public support for Medicare for All, an all-time high. (It’s even increasingly popular among Republicans)

Hivemind. I'm passing through Berlin for a day and a half. Should I: * Stay in the city near Hbf both nights, requiring me to leave very early on departure day to make it through security and immigration? * Stay one night near Hbf and the second at the airport? * Stay both nights at airport?
