Excellent long explainer from @monkemma.bsky.social on the "new jobs"/migrants nonsense.

I have already complained to www.ipso.co.uk/making-a-com... about the Mail, but feel free to complain about the Sun, Express, Telegraph, etc...

Emma Monk is brilliant 👏👏👏 (follow her!), but bloody hell...her work is solid proof that Brandolini's Law is real. 🫨

That @monkemma.bsky.social has outdone herself with this one. Superb take down.

They've all been at it. I wonder whether being able to point to a "report" that made the misleading claim will give them some cover? I guess we'll find out... 27/

Telegraph: migrants taking four in five new jobsGB News: 4 and 5 new jobs in Britain taken by migrants, damning report finds.The Sun. Work it out: Fury as 4 out of 5 new UK jobs created over the past decade taken by foreign workers rather than British citizens.Express foreigners take 80% of all new UK jobs. Britain's written off.

So if anyone feels like complaining about this latest round of misleading headlines, please do.

Not sure what difference it makes - but the papers KNOW what they're doing is wrong. They've been rapped on the knuckles for this exact behaviour before

@monkemma.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 6:11 PM

Apparently they were "happy" to set out the correct position🤔 (At the back of the paper where no one will bother reading it, and at the bottom of the months-old online version which no one is going to re-read) The damage is done with the headline. The correction will never undo it 25/

Correction

In a previous version of this article we stated that the latest employment figures showed that people from overseas got new jobs at 10 times the rate of British born workers. This is incorrect. The latest figures actually showed changes in net employment, which is the number of people in employment rather than the number of jobs that are available. Net changes in employment does not show any information about the proportion of people getting new jobs in the UK. Following an IPSO ruling on a similar inaccuracy, we are happy to set out the correct position.
@monkemma.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 6:11 PM

But guess what? That wasn't the only time they made that "mistake" in 2015 They had to remove the line "with people from overseas getting new jobs at 10 times the rate of British-born workers" 24/

Express headline:

Regain border control to improve workers' lives.

The latest employment figures show David Cameron's jobs miracle continuing, with a record number of people now in work. However it is migrants who are reaping much of the benefit, with people from overseas getting new jobs at ten times the rate of British-born workers. Express headline:

Regain border control to improve workers' lives.

@monkemma.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 6:11 PM

So the Express had to change the online headline, include a correction (right at the bottom) and print a correction in a subsequent print edition (buried on pg 40🙄) As an aside - look at the photos they used to illustrate this article 😱 They remained in the updated version. 23/

Updated Express headline next to original and showing the correction:

Shocking figures reveal 3 out of 4 British jobs go to EU migrants.

The number of EU migrants employed in the UK has risen by 20%. Correction

This article was amended on 22 December 2015. It originally reported “shocking figures” revealing that 3 out of 4 new jobs go to EU migrants. This is incorrect. The figures referred to, published by the Office for National Statistics, refer to net changes in employment and not to the number of people entering employment, or new jobs. The figures showed that the number of UK Nationals in employment increased by 122,000 compared to an increase of 324,000 in non-UK EU nationals.
@monkemma.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 6:11 PM

In 2015, the Express ran with: 🚨"Shocking figures reveal three out of four British jobs go to EU migrants" (FFS - it's like a broken record!) The upheld IPSO complaint explained why the figures were misleading👇 (yes that's basically my previous thread and this one condensed!) 22/

The ONS figures represented net changes in employment, and not new jobs. He said that it was obviously wrong that migrants fill most new British jobs; the vast majority of people starting a new job every day in the UK are born in the UK. In 2010, for example, approximately 85% of new hires were of British-born workers. The article gave the significantly misleading impression that migrants were displacing British-born people in the workforce. Net changes in employment figures do not show any information about the proportion of job hunters who found work in a given period; they do not allow for people who leave the job market permanently; and they do not reflect that some individuals might get two jobs, or half a job. The complainant noted that the statistical bulletin which had been the source of the figures specifically stated that “the estimates of employment by both nationality and country of birth relate to the number of people in employment rather than the number of jobs. Now I mentioned debunking an almost identical headline and CSJ report earlier this year, but what I hadn't realised was how long this battle between the press and those who care about correcting misinformation had been going on for!

Credit to @jdportes.bsky.social for being the one who cared
21/

@monkemma.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 6:11 PM

This doesn’t point to foreigners “taking” jobs away from British people. It suggests an increase in available positions that cannot be fulfilled by British workers alone. 20/

@monkemma.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 6:11 PM

Jobs held by foreign workers have indeed increased from 11% to 20% But the whole pie has also increased, as has the number of payrolled jobs held by British workers. 19/

@monkemma.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 6:11 PM

"But it's based on official government data" is not a get-out-of-jail-free card for misinformation! A lot of misinformation IS based on real data - it's just manipulated to tell a story and stripped of nuance to make it "easy" to understand. Debunking it involves explaining complexities 🫣

@monkemma.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 6:11 PM

So here is a far less misleading handy graphic using the exact same dataset as CSJ. Amazing what you can do with data, huh!🤷‍♀️ 17/

Two pie charts compare UK payrolled employment stats for July 2014 and December 2025, highlighting changes in nationalities.
@monkemma.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 6:11 PM

And they will have known full well that most people would read that to mean who *started* a new job since 2014. Not how many EXTRA people are working in payrolled jobs since 2014. 16/

@monkemma.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 6:11 PM

But of course logic like that is lost on the right-wing think tank/media ecosystem. So the Daily Mail went with this graphic showing "who got new jobs in Britain since 2024" I mean, look at the big scary red section! 🙄🙄🙄 15/

Daily Mail graphic:
A pie chart displays new jobs in Britain since 2014: UK nationals 734,000, EU citizens 408,000, rest of the world circa 2.5 million.
