The Liberals and Conservatives teamed up again today — funny how that keeps happening — to get Bill C-39 over the hurdle of its first vote. The massive, 243-page bill bulldozes environmental protections, Indigenous rights and attacks the right to strike. Here's what this means:

This guy also voted "yea" lol

It blew my mind seeing former Ontario NDP deputy leader vote for this. So-called environmentally-conscious Liberal MPs voting for this. Hard not to feel cynical watching how much people will change as a result of the power they’re in proximity to.

@rachelgilmore.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 7:33 PM

Anyway, it’s headed to committee now. Can’t wait for a fulsome study (blind approval with a tiny bit of pushback from the bloc).

@rachelgilmore.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 7:32 PM

Only 26 MPs voted against the Bill at this first vote. From what I saw, it was entirely NDP, Bloc and Green who opposed it. Conservatives and Liberals all appeared to vote for it. Those 14 Liberals who claimed to care about the environment……very curious where your spine is?

Zero people lost their properties. Repealing the rights of Indigenous people as your core policy is nazi shit

By “we” I mean people who arguably already see through him, most people in my comments etc. We’re sadly the minority right now. Unless that changes and people see the long-term impacts of his decisions, something humans notoriously suck at, I think he could very well have a “positive” legacy.

@rachelgilmore.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 5:41 PM

If he continues to get headlines touting “unprecedented investment” and “Carney stands up to Trump” etc during his time in office, successors tend to be saddled with the long-term consequences of decisions made by their predecessors. We’ll know, but most Canadians and international folks won’t.

@rachelgilmore.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 5:31 PM

Once I look at his actions through that lens, they all make a lot more sense. It also makes me very nervous for the future of our country.

@rachelgilmore.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 5:31 PM

This, to me, all points to a man who isn’t driven by cold economics or by the long term success of Canada. When a man is already very wealthy and respected, but in terms of the specifics of his field rather than the greatness of the man, what does he still desire? Legacy.

@rachelgilmore.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 5:31 PM

Finally, he’s shown himself to be extremely sensitive to criticism — more than a little prickly in caucus meetings, saying he never wanted to see Karina Gould again after she lightly needled him during the leadership race, reportedly obsessing over news coverage internally.

@rachelgilmore.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 5:31 PM

He’s focusing hugely on shoring up his reputation on the world stage. Major speeches for thunderous applause (that those of us who pay attention to his actual policy moves know are removed from his domestic approach). Legacy, internationally.

@rachelgilmore.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 5:31 PM

He appears seized with popularity: the pipeline, for example, has no economic case. It’s devastating environmentally (long term). But it is seeing him land the historic legacy of unprecedented Liberal popularity in Alberta, something unthinkable years ago. More focus on legacy.
