I grew up in Georgia. I went back home to cover two trans candidates making history, and it brought me a lot of joy. I drove from Atlanta, where Bentley Hudgins is running, to Cartersville, where Bella Bautista is making her bid, to get a sense of the difference between their two districts.

Maine Democrats are all in for Troy Jackson, especially after Tuesday night’s debate. But voters told me they’re worried about him getting pummeled on the airwaves — and fear that even in a good year for Dems, Susan Collins could be “a Teflon candidate”

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins has long defied national political winds to return to office. But Democrat Troy Jackson is betting that her vote to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh and the Supreme Court’s overturning of abortion rights will persuade voters to vote for him. https://bit.ly/4zmTVBF

A person stands smiling, holding a large, stacked pile of paper as tall as them, representing software code, next to a chalkboard. Bernadette Greene-Placentia, a Democratic candidate for Congress in Arizona, shared publicly for the first time that she was raped while fixing campaign signs over the summer. She's speaking out now, she said, because “I need to let women know that it’s okay to talk about it.” https://bit.ly/4y8f1Ty

In 1999, Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson brought a challenge to the Supreme Court, which ruled in their favor and agreed that people with disabilities have a right to live outside the walls of asylums, state hospitals and nursing homes. More than two decades later, that right is under threat.

Bentley Hudgins and Bella Bautista are both are running for a spot in the Georgia House. Both would make history as the first trans members of the body. Neither wants to discuss identity politics or pronouns — they want to talk about data centers, the price of groceries and healthcare.

My latest story, published with @unclosetedmedia.bsky.social — I went to Georgia to talk with two trans candidates making history right now.

Their paths to the statehouse couldn't be more different, but they want the same things for voters: better healthcare, lower costs, and no data centers.
