in 2020 my lab quit Microsoft Word and began writing in R Markdown, an open-source document-publishing system that facilitates a clear, permanent link between statements in text (scientific prose) and the code producing analyses and visualizations supporting those statements (scientific analyses)

a preprint generated with R Markdown with the following text

Ecological momentary assessment reveals causal effects
of music enrichment on infant mood

Music appears universally in human infancy with self-evident effects: as many parents know intuitively,
infants love to be sung to. The long-term effects of parental singing remain unclear, however. In an offsetdesign exploratory 10-week randomized trial conducted in 2023 (N = 110 families of infants, Mage =
3.67 months, 53% female, 73% White), the study manipulated the frequency of infant-directed singing
via a music enrichment intervention. Results, measured by smartphone-based ecological momentary
assessment (EMA), show that infant-directed singing causes general post-intervention improvements
to infant mood, but not to caregiver mood. The findings show the feasibility of longitudinal EMA
(retention: 92%; EMA response rate: 74%) of infants and the potential of longer-term and higherintensity music enrichment interventions to improve health in infancy.

I think tts ends up sounding too perfect and makes the whole feel very AI. But I should at least try the Gemini’s voice cloning.

@hadley.nzOct 10, 2026, 11:12 AM

I like the music 😭 but it seems like that’s the most common complaint so I’ll take it down. I did try a slightly slower paced version but got feedback it was too slow. Hard to strike the balance right when our attention spans seem to be shrinking.

@hadley.nzOct 10, 2026, 11:10 AM

Thanks that’s super helpful!

Opus 5.5 creates the script (with my feedback) then uses Gemini tts for rough timings and to iterate on the overall flow. Then it made me a recording studio to record the final content one scene at a time.

Very soon!

I'm trying to get better at making short explanatory videos, using AI to radically decrease production time while hopefully still keeping the human touch. I'd love to know what you think of this video that briefly introduces S7: youtube.com/shorts/C98di...

In case you weren't able to make it, @sara-altman.bsky.social and I wrote up the talk for the @posit.co OSS blog. We talked about the rise of "vibe analysis," the pitfalls of human-in-the-loop, and some new software from Posit. opensource.posit.co/blog/2026-10...

We released rig 0.11.0, the #Rstats installation manager, this week (and 0.10.0 a bit before). New: a website at rig.r-lib.org, user mode R installations, R package management and R projects. First of three blog posts, on R installations:

If you want a more hopeful counterpoint for open source software, here's a careful series of incremental improvements to httr: github.com/r-lib/httr2/...

I think there's a point in your career where you start to get more inputs than you can process and you have to learn new strategies for being ok with that. Maybe AI is pushing that point earlier for many people.

@hadley.nzOct 7, 2026, 1:46 PM

That's interesting because for me it hasn't gotten noticeably worse. I've always received a ton of emails that are of questionable value and definitely longer than they need to be.

@hadley.nzOct 7, 2026, 11:56 AM

Opus figures it out. Partly by asking Gemini to transcribe the speech with timestamps

@hadley.nzOct 7, 2026, 11:55 AM

I feel like I’m missing something here because no one is forcing you to read it. You can just say thanks, but we’re not interested.
