New on Nebula: Given that high speed rail apparently isn’t an option in the U.S., what’s the best way to travel 150 miles? (And no, I’m not driving this nightmare slog of a trip)

nebula.tvCityNerd — 150 Miles Optimized: Seattle to Portland (and back)I've taken the Amtrak Cascades between Seattle and Portland hundreds of times, but never made the trip by air. Some people swear by it — but does flying 150 miles make sense?

dc statehood is non-negotiable after trump's actions in his second term. republicans despise the people of the city that hosts them, and there is little reason to think that, now that the seal is broken on treating them as an occupied population, a next republican president will be more restrained

Happy Jacques Tati's birthday, a true genius as a filmmaker. (1907-1982).
Need an introduction? Try MR. HULOT'S HOLIDAY (1953), and then MON ONCLE (1958), both available on Criterion.
His masterpiece, PLAYTIME (1967), is consistently cited as one of the greatest films ever made.

Worked with City of Vancouver on several projects in the last 12 years or so. Amazing staff who are always out just a bit ahead of a council that itself just keeps trending more and more progressive. (I’m here at the same conference too!) Will have to come up and do a video at some point

Someone should start studying the use of AI-generated images for NIMBY causes. It’s honestly fascinating. It also shows most of these folks are clueless- the guy in the green shirt has three arms, for example

Well you probably could

New on Nebula: Field notes from a city that, refreshingly, takes its housing supply crisis seriously. Also, I like grackles

Cruise line video was removed by YouTube over truly the dumbest copyright strike. Obviously fighting it, it’ll be back up in a few weeks like nothing happened. This is not an ad for Nebula, but it is still available on Nebula: nebula.tv/videos/linds...

Jose Andres is the absolute GOAT. turbolib who has brought meals to disaster zones after the Haiti earthquake & to war-stricken families in Ukraine and Gaza and now he’s YIMBYposting in the face of Spain’s severe housing shortage

Incredible to see the "experts" on resolving the housing emergency that Spain is experiencing! On every television! @telediario_tve @ANoticias
@tele5_noticias @noticias_cuatro The reality is that we have politicians who try to create decrees and solutions when they lack the preparation or knowledge to devise a real solution to the problem we're facing.
Spain doesn't have a problem of a lack of decrees. It has a problem of a lack of housing.
And as long as the Government keeps confusing announcing measures with solving problems, we'll keep paying the consequences of its inaction.
Subsidizing demand without increasing supply pressures prices. Regulating a market more and more without building new housing doesn't eliminate scarcity: it manages it. Taxing a type of rental can change incentives, but it doesn't lay a single brick either.Because housing doesn't get cheaper by distributing scarcity. It gets cheaper by ending it.
Spain needs to build. A lot.
More available land. Permits in months, not years. More density wherever possible. Legal certainty. Much more public housing and also private housing.
But the Government isn't doing what's necessary. It prefers to intervene on the few homes that exist rather than create the conditions for there to be many more. It prefers to present patches as solutions and load the cost of its failure onto owners, developers, and citizens.
The rest can serve to redistribute, protect certain groups, or change incentives. But let's not confuse that with solving the underlying problem.
You don't fix a lack of housing by better distributing the few homes that exist. You fix it by making many more exist.
Less propaganda. Less patches. Less obsession with intervening on the same apartment.
More supply. More construction. More homes.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:

Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

@nerd4cities.bsky.social does amazing stuff and I love this episode’s highlighting of all the progress in the PNW as well as the call out early in episode that NONE OF IT IS AI. Increasingly uk unsubscribing and sharing less, or not at all, lazy content creators hastening our planet demise.

This one’s coming up in a couple days — still spots available (it’s a pretty big venue!), but not many. To this day I’ve made more content in Vegas than any other city, and I can’t wait to talk about all of it
