‘GBR South Western’ has already been used on a newly liveried EMU! Either it‘s ‘GBR South Western’ or it’s ‘South Western Railway’, not both; very confusing messaging as Mark says :)

It’s InterCity XPT all the way - a model mode of transport - Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre. The Australian version of the BR HST 125 came into service in 1982 & still runs.

BRB(R) were the owners of all former British Rail-related IP until it became defunct in 2014 when IP transferred to DfT (although they flogged some, eg Network SouthEast); I guess they wanted to be differentiated visually from the companies who used the symbol under licence from National Rail

Yes and it was truly awful 😂

God is very faithful :)

Which I’ve now trumped with this 1943-44 war map

It appears from much earlier than that on our mapping archive - for example, it's on this Quarter Inch map from 1946:
www.sabre-roads.org.uk/maps/index.p...

But not on the same sheet from 1939:
www.sabre-roads.org.uk/maps/index.p...

It's there on all our mapping immediately post-war.

The earliest map on which I can find this north curve is this OS one inch map from 1946 (a 1930 map with corrections)

Was this north curve (between ECM1 and BCA) at Sandy real? If so, can’t have lasted long; seems to start appearing on maps c1967
(Map: OS 1:25,000 from the fabulous NLS Maps website maps.nls.uk)

Nice graphite-based click bait! (Ahem, Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100 6H, surely?j

@doublearrow64.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 3:16 PM

Rounded too, even the symbol!

@doublearrow64.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 8:41 AM

Just look at that chubby symbol (and here’s the reason why)

@doublearrow64.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 8:06 AM

Where can I read this?

@doublearrow64.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 8:00 AM

I’m also trying to pretend that there is no Network Rail station icon on it either 😩

@doublearrow64.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 7:59 AM

If we can just move the lettering a bit closer to the symbol…

@doublearrow64.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 12:47 PM

It’s busy, I’ll give you that 😥 So CIE basically took the LT roundel and made it fly, which is ironic as this map predominantly shows land transport 😬

@doublearrow64.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 2:06 PM

Take my 5p and give me a ‘Time Table’! For the pink and orange, are we talking M100 Y60 versus M60 Y100 (or similar), or are they actual specials? I’ve never really taken the time to examine the ‘Lazy S‘ Selnec logotype but it’s rather spectacular in all its mid-twentieth century italic glory

@doublearrow64.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 4:16 PM

Bezier curves definitely have their limitations and even circles (or quarter circles ftm) aren’t necessarily perfect

@doublearrow64.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 4:14 PM

I think if you’re gonna do it, you’ve got to keep it as simple as possible (no additional control points if you can avoid them); row 2 column 2 does pretty well :) Not sure it’s an expedient method, but I think it definitely looks better!

@doublearrow64.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 7:33 AM

Whether that is worth it is of course an economic judgment call, even if it does look a little more natural and a less bumpy ride round the corner. The principle applies to all angles btw, not just right angles :) I like your willingness to investigate. Have you come across Tunni lines in type?
