This was such a good episode! One of the first ones I listened to.
(And pairs well with mine on Martin Frobisher!

The chat ends w/ a mention of the 2 graphics in the book by Rebecca Lee Kunz (Cherokee), which reinterpret Elizabethan print culture through Native flora––sunflowers, maize, tobacco flowers. #IndigenousPeoplesDay is a good day to remember that Tudor history is also the history of Indigenous peoples.
Just noticed that my chat w/ Suzannah Lipscomb for Not Just the Tudors aired recently – we talk about Henry VIII's cash problem, North American tricksters & shamans, Cleopatra's earring, & Jacobean fears of being duped into wearing fakes:

no evidence but nonetheless wondering if Henry Rich, Earl of Holland was keeping Henrietta Maria company while telling her stories of Caribbean islands…
what a setting to talk patronesses & Atlantic economies today, in the company of Elizabeth I’s Armada portrait & Henrietta Maria’s painted ceiling at Queen’s House. With thanks to curators & @forarthistory.org.uk for including me in the festival programme ✨
@rijksmuseum.bsky.social and @museodelprado.es Launch Landmark Partnership on Women in Art and History
"The Rijksmuseum and the Museo Nacional del Prado announce an in-depth research partnership focusing on women in art and history."
'Pearls, Sugar, & Tobacco Flowers' happens this Tues, 6 October @forarthistory.org.uk festival.
Come hear about how women from Elizabeth I to Henrietta Maria expressed their power & style in relation to the Americas, & bask in Inigo Jones' breathtaking architecture:
It's week 1 and that means the start of a new @crems-york.bsky.social semester of #earlymodern delights! 🗃️ Many of which are hybrid and open to all: docs.google.com/document/d/1...
I’d love to know. Need to look into the architecture more - hard to get too close as the house is still inhabited!
The Atlantic world never far from mind — my B&B was just above ‘Barbados Villa’, a 19th century home built from transatlantic sugar money, its architecture inspired by Caribbean estate houses.
A charming weekend in Scotland to talk about #AGoldenWorld at the #WigtownBookFestival. Lavender skies and a full moon over forests and marshland. My lovely driver Dave pointed out smugglers’ caves and took me to a Neolithic mound when we arrived early for my train.
looks very fun!
